McGLASHAN COLLEGE

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING The break-up ceremony of the John McGlashan College was held yesterday afternoon in the school hall. The chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr,T. C. Ross, presided and a large number of parents and friends was present. The staff had suffered greatly from depletions through enlistments, the chairman said in his address, while he honoured the individual for joining up, he thought thst key men would be probably equally as useful in their schools in keening up the standard of education. That, h wever, was a matter for the Education Department, as individual colleges could not appeal on behalf of their masters. The college had been fortunate in the replacing of masters. McGlashan College would not be ashamed of its old boys, Mr Ross added. Many had enlisted, and already one had given his life for his country. On account of the shortage of labour, the roll number was likely to decrease at the school, but parents should remember that young men with Christian ideals would be required to take their places as the economic and political leaders of the future. The acting head master (Dr A. H. West) presented his report, which dealt with staff changes during the year and the academic and athletic achievements of the pupils, as well as giving a brief summary of old' boys’ achievements. After the prizes won during the year had been presented by Mrs C. E. Hercus, an address was given by Dr D. W. Carmalt Jones, who spoke on tradition in schools. Parents sent their children to school for the formation of their character and the acquisition of certain standards of conduct, he said. Tradition was a continuity of these ideals. It was true that tradition altered with the changes in conditions in the social world. There was just as much tradition in a new school as an old. In McGlashan College the pupils were making their own traditions, which were equally as good as those of the Tong-established schools at Home. At the conclusion of his address Dr Carmalt Jones was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr A. C. Cameron.
