CITY POLICE COURT

Friday, December 13 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) Theft Stated by the prosecution to have forced a drawer in a house in Invercargill and stolen a £5 note and two £ 1 notes, a youth, publication of whose name was prohibited in the meantime, pleaded guilty to the theft of £7.—He was ordered to be remanded in custody until Monday, the child welfare officer to submit a report in the meantime. . Price Fixation “ I am instructed to say that the increased price was not such as to justify any suggestion that the firm has been profiteering,” said the Crown Prosecutor, Mr F. B. Adams, when Allen, Son and McLure, Ltd., for whom Mr J. C. Mowat appeared, were charged with having sold goods at a price higher than that ruling in September, 1939. without the consent of the Price Fixing Tribunal.—Agreeing that there was no suggestion of profiteering, his Worship entered a conviction and ordered payment of costs (10s) and solicitor’s fee (£2 2s).—Messrs Arthur Barnett, Ltd., and A. and T. Inglis, Ltd., were similarly charged. Mr Adams stressed the fact that the department was not concerned with the reasonableness of the prices in these cases, but simply with the fact that the goods had been sold without permission from the tribunal. —The magistrate agreed with the submission of Mr J. S. Sinclair, who represented both firms, that there had been no suggestion of profiteering, and in each case entered a conviction, with costs (10s) and solicitor’s fee (£2 2s).—Three charges of a similar nature were preferred against the Otago Farmers Co-operative Association, Ltd.
