FIRST O.M. FOR R.A.F.

SIR CYRIL NEWALL (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, Nov. 1. Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Cyril Newall was invested by the King with the Order of Merit at Buckingham Palace on October 29. He is the first Royal Air Force officer to receive this honour. It was at the end of 1935 that the statutes of the Order were altered to allow air force officers to receive it. The honour was . conferred on Sir Cyril at an audience, he had of the King on relinquishing his post as Chief of the Air Staff. Sir Cyril Newall makes the fourth military member of the Order, the other three being Field Marshal Sir Philip W Chetwode, Lieutenant-gene-ral Lord Baden-Powell, and Admiral of the Fleet Lord Chatfield.
