SOUTH ISLAND CONFERENCE ALUMINIUM MANUFACTURE DISCUSSED A conference of South Island Progress Leagues was held in Christchurch on Tuesday to consider the important subjects of soil erosion and light metal manufacture in the South Island Messrs H. M. Mackay (presidents and W B. Steel (secretary), of the Otago Expansion League were present, . Mr Steel also represented Southland. Delegates from-'the Buller and Marlborough Progress Leagues met the hosts the Canterbury Progress League and the Light Metal League. • . . ■■■ The feasibility of manufacturing aluminium in the South Island was explained. By the use of the latest hydro-electric power in the , Sounds district this industry, it was stated, could be made a most valuable asset-to the Empire. The matter had already been the subject, of prolonged discussions with a Government department in Wellington, and it was to press for a full investigation and submission of the proposal to the Home authorities. .The conference unanimously decided to take action in the matter. / The soil erosion'problem, it was reported, was also being urged upon the Government as a matter of national urgency in order to conserve the country's production.
