RABBIT CONTROL
INTEREST IN SOUTHLAND FARMERS APPROVE SYSTEM , • ~.. , ; ■-..■.:-.-• V (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Dec. 5. An unusual amount of interest has been shown in Southland during recent nShs in the establishment of rabbit districts and in the enlargement of the existing districts, Several areas which have been under the control of rabbit boards for a number of years, have been enlarged this year at .the request of the occupiers of ng .land. Petitions have also been signed for the enlargement of other areas, and the creation of new districts ism progress elsewhere.- , ' - If all the present: schemes are completed a substantial proportion of the most closely settled areas in Southland will have established a community system" of rabbit control. Among the reasons advanced for the ing increased interest in rabbit control by this means is the point that rabbits teem in some waste areas, and that individual effort by the farmers to control the pest cannot succeed. A deputation of farmers who recently waited on a district rabbit board with a request that its area extended, stated that the rabbit board system permitted the proper organisation of labour in controlling the pest. The difficulty which prevented farmers from taking full advantage of subsidised labour for rabbiting was that the efforts of some farmers were nullified by the inaction of others, who took no steps against the rabbits. -
