HIGH SCHOOLS' BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Boys and Girls' High Schools' Board was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs W. R. Brugh (chairman), F.H. Campbell, D. C. Cameron, Dr G. E. Thompson and Bishop Fitchett. A letter was received from the Director of Education stating that he had approved of expenditure on the following works:—Painting exterior of the Otago Boys' High School, £150; painting exterior of gymnasium, £9l; and repairs to gymnasium, £7; internal renovations to the west wing of the Otago Girls' High School, £290; repairing and cleaning the Oamaru stonework at the school, £l62.—The letter was received. The director reported that authority to carry out repairs and painting at the Otago Boys' High School at a cost of £6O was being held'over in the meantime. Annual Reports The annual reports of the three high schools under the jurisdiction of the board were received. Included in the report from the rector of the Boys' High School (Mr H. P. Kidson) is the following:— "We have endeavoured, while aiding the war effort in various humble ways, to see that the school work does not suffer. A much larger number of boys is working during the holidays, most of them on farm Work. A strong St. John Ambulance Division in the school is the result of a desire to do something of value in the community. We have been fortunate in retaining our staff up to the end of the year, but two' of the men who volunteered early in the year will be called up shortly. The response of the old boys of this school in voluntary enlistment for overseas service was remarkably fine. We know of 773 .of them who by November 20 were either overseas or in camp training for overseas service. This does not include those who have voluntarily enlisted and who are waiting to be called up or those who are in territorial camps. There must be a very great . number of names which we have not got. Already we have suffered losses. Nine old boys have been killed or are missing. One is -a prisoner of war. Four have been decorated. All these are Air Force men. Our head boy left us before the end of the year to proceed to the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. We have two refugees from Germany and Austria, and two evacuees from Glasgow and Kent oh our roll, and the boys do their best to make them feel at. home." Tenders Accepted The following tenders for supplies for Campbell House, also for kindling wood for the schools, for the year 1941 were accepted:— Bread.—J. G. Laurenson and Son (present contractors) Milk Dunedin Wholesale Milk Supply, Ltd. (present contractors). Butter.—Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company (present contractors). Meat.
