The October meeting of the Milton branch was presided over by Mrs M. C. Milne. The roll call was, “Biscuits and their recipes ” The competitions resulted: —Bloom: Mrs H. Baird 1, Miss Noel Sheat 2, Spike: Mrs Sheat 1, Mrs Michelle 2. An interesting address was given by Mrs Sheat, her subject being “Spring Flowers." »V* v "i* The Waikouaiti branch held its monthlv meeting on Friday last, when Mrs Tait presided. It was decided to accept donations towards the “ W.D.F.U. Spitfire.” Members joined the Farmers’ Union to hear an address given by Mr B. A. Taylor, B.V.Sc.. on r ‘ Disease in Animals.” Members of the Farmers’ Union were guests at supper. when Mesdames S. and W. Lee and Misses Carson and Wilson acted as hostesses. * * * The Glenomaru branch met on Saturday last, Mrs J. Wilson presiding, The 'roll call was “The uses of kerosene." A competition, “Hand-worked handkerchief,” resulted:—Seniors Mesdames J. Searle and F. Mudie (equal) 1. P. Lough ton 3; juniors— Misses M. Mudie 1. D. Wright 2, L. Ward 3. Mrs Littler gave an interesting demonstration on “Wool Work" and Mrs J. Jones expressed thanks on behalf of the members.
Mrs Neil (vice-president) presided at the monthly meeting of the Aire-dale-Rosebery branch. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Poison in the loss of her hom< through fire.
A birthday spray was presented to Miss Mavis Buick. The motto, given by Miss L. Willetts, was, “It is better to creep slowly on the right road than to march quickly on the wrong.” The winner of Mi's Robb's flower competition was Mrs E. Roberts, Mrs A. Lory being placed second. Other competitions resulted r.s follows: —Flowers — Mrs J. Stephens 1, Mrs G. Neil 2; cotton frock—Miss I. Hastings 3, Mrs Buick 2; health fruit loaf—Mrs Buick 1, Miss I. Hastings 2. Mesdgmes Robb and Roberts were the hostesses.
The Glenorchy branch celebrated its ninth birthday on October 25, when a large number of members and friends were welcomed by Mrs K. Scott (president), who introduced Mrs Annan, of Clyde, president of the Otago Provincial Executive. Mrs Annan spoke of the help which was being given by the W.D.F.U. to patriotic organisations and. also conveyed birthday greetings from her branch. Congratulatory telegrams were received from the Queenstown branch and from Mrs M. Harris, of Cromwell. Bouquets of narcissi, tulips, and ferns were presented to Mrs Scott. Mrs Annan, and Mrs D. Scott (secretary). Mrs Annan cut the birthday cake, which had been baked by Mrs J. A. Reid and iced by Mrs D. Scott and Miss A. Scott. Songs were sun a bv Mr J. Craig, and a clever exhibition of roller skating was given by Mr F. Massey. A "musical saw item by Mr and Mrs F. Heffernan was also much appreciated. Competitions resulted as follows: —Blindfold waltz. Miss V. Affleck and Mr H. Madieson; apple derby. Miss J. Hume and Mr S. Wilson: lucky ticket dance. Mrs Beardsley and Mr A. Sutherland: Jack and Jill dance. Mr T. Bryant and Miss Keys: Statue Highland scnotlische, Miss I. Aldridge and Mr P. Scott; war songs, past and present (arranged by Mrs W. Clingin). Miss B. Craig and Mr F. Massey; Monte'Carlo waltz. Mrs A. Tripp and Mr T. Bryant, jun.; 1 Tesno ” (conducted by Mr J. Johnston), Mr D. Scott. A blindfold quadrille created much amusement. Delightful dance music was supplied by the local orchestra, which included Mrs A. Scott (piano), Mesdames D. Scott and G. Scott (violins) Mr F Heffernan (guitar) Mr A. Scott (banjo) and Mr .J Johnston (drums). Extras were played bv Mrs A Sutherland. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mrs A. Elliott and Mr C. Hume. Mrs K. Scott, on behalf of the members, presented Mr s S. C. Knowles with a small gift in appreciation of her kindness during the past season’s meetings. Mrs Knowles
was also presented with, a bouquet. The thanks of the Glenorchy branch are due to Mesdames A. Reid, J. Thornton. and L. Groves (Glenorchy) and Messrs J. Gardiner and A. H. Wheatly (Queenstown) for their generous donations.
