ALEXANDRA Gala Day On Saturday the Alexandra Committee held its final appeal and effort in aid of the Rehabilitation Fund. The numerous stalls and side-shows met with excellent support, and the Air Force Queen’s funds were augmented to the extent of over £2OO. 1 The day was concluded with a carnival dance in the evening, when the takings again amounted to over £2O. Presentation to Soldier Prior to his return to camp, Private J. C. Hull was met by the Mayor, Mr W. Bringans, and presented with a pocket wallet and money belt. CROMWELL Cricket In the association cricket fixtures on Saturday, Lowburn defeated Excelsior, at Lowburh. by /105 runs to 48. For the winners, M. Partridge was in good form to make 50 runs and take five wickets for 25 runs. At Oinakau the home team defeated Cromwell by 204 runs to 169. For tlie winners the top scorers were Blakely 62, Pope 44, Lester 23. and Holden 23 For the losers, Macdonald 49 apd Benson 25 were the principal scorers. Air Force Queen The Lowburn Patriotic Committee held a very successful final function on Saturday evening in aid of the Air Force Queen funds. The evening took the form of cards and dancing, during which a mock court was held This provided a good deal of interest and amusement and was responsible for a substantial increase in the funds. As a result of this effort the funds benefited to the extent of approximately £33. - .

The Weather , After the severe storm of the previous week-end. the conditions improved considerably. and fine weather was experienced for the greater tfart of the week. On Sunday afternoon conditions became threatening, and in the evening a cold southerly brought heavy showers of rain. The Kawarau and Clutha Rivers, which at the Labour Day week-end showed one of the sharpest rises for a considerable time, dropped a few feet during the week but are still at a fairly high level. Amateur Swimming The annual 1 meeting ot the Cromwell Amateur Swimming Club was held on Wednesday evening, the senior vice-presi-dent. Mr A. CLYDE Air Force Queen The final effort of the Clyde town and small district for the Air Force Queen, held on Friday afternoon and evening, took the form of a Paddy’s market. The financial result exceeded expectations, the sum of £lO3 being taken for the day Included in the total was £5 2s Gd from a copper trail conducted by the Boy Scouts. The presence of the Vincent Countess, Miss Jill Lethbridge, was also greatly appreciated by the committee, and her efforts also helped to swell the total. The Clyde Bowling. Tennis, and Croquet Clubs’ card evenings, halt the proceeds of which went to the Air Force Queen, helped the fund to the amount of £ll. Bowling

The Central Otago Centre’s fixtures will be commenced next Saturday, The matches will be: Wanaka, three rinks to Clyde; Bannockburn, four rinks to Roxburgh: Alexandra, six rinks to, Cromwell; and Omakau. rinks to Alexandra. All the greens with the exception of Omakau are now open, and are in good order. The first game for the, ’’Jolly Cup" will be played at Alexandra to-morrow, a Cromwell rink being the challenger. After a fine week, further rain set in at 6 o’clock on Sunday evening. The Molyneux is still high from last week’s downpour. There Is a fair amount of debris on the Gorge roads.

OMAKAU Lauder Presbyterian Church A special women’s meeting was held recently in the Ophir Church, when some 60 people from the various parts of the parish gathered at the Invitation of the Ophlr-Omakau branch of the Presbyterian women's Missionary Union (P.W.M.U.). A party of visitors from the Alexandra branch presented a short missionary play, and a few other items were given. Mr* W. J. Lennon, president of the local P.W.M.U., welcomed the ladies and outlined the activities of ’the Missionary Union. The Rev. N. C. Hall outlined the obligations of the church in the Home, Maori, and foreign fields. The proceeds from a collection and from a sale of cakes are to be given to the Mission Fund. It was explained that of the £45,000 required for the year’s “ Budget ” the sum from the Lauder parish for the year 1940-41 was £3B. Afternoon tea iwas served by the local ladies. Air Force Queen

The final function in connection with the patriotic appeal was held on Saturday night, taking the form of a dance In the Omakau Hall. This was well attended, the proceeds totalling £32. Central Otago A. and P. Association The annual meeting of the Central Otago At and P. Association was held at Omakau on Thursday, the president (Mr H. G. Wilson) presiding over a fair attendance of members. The balance sheet showing a credit balance of £l9 14s 6d. was adopted Last year the show was no„ held owing to war conditions, but after some discussion it was decided to hold the annual show as usual on March 1, the prize-money not to exceed £IOO, and all profits to be given to the patriotic funds. Office-bearers elected were as follows: —President, Mr H G. Wilson: weepresidents, Messrs E. Naylor and R. Scorgie; auditor, Mr H. E. Stevens; secretary. Mr D. Maclean; Management Committee —Messrs W. Rutherford, R. Jopp, A, Brown, J. McKnight, J. Stafford, C. White, S. Leask, J. Macdonald J. Lucas. J. Jeffs, H. Oaten, W. J. Dundass, and Mesdames G. OTUREHUA The rainfall registered here Tor the month of October was 154 points. The only fall of any magnitude was on the night of the 27th, when 77 points fell. Favoured by splendid weather, the public turned out in large numbers, and the fund benefited by over £IOO as a result of , the day’s efforts. The total amount collected in the West Otago district on behalf of the fund, including the value of the stock drive, is approximately £I4OO. - LAWRENCE Presentation to Soldier Private A. Ledlngham, on leave from Burnham Camp, was presented with £2 2s and a wallet from the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association on Friday last by the chairman of the-Lawrence Patriotic Committee (Mr R.
