Beau Vite’s win in the Mackinnon Stakes on Saturday suggests that he will be at the top of his form for the Melbourne Cup to-day. Historian, who finished about four lengths aWay, will be meeting Beau Vite on 151 b better terms in the Melbourne Cup, and such a substantial poundage makes a big difference at the end of two miles. Heavy Liability
It Is stated, that if Beau Vite wins the Melbourne Cup the double with Beaulivre will take £200,000 out of the ring. Sydney fielders have been hedging since the Caulfield Cup. “ Perhaps it will give you an idea when 1 tell you that, since the; Caulfield Cup was run. 1 have laid £21,000 against Beau Vite In the Melbourne Cup. all to Sydney bookmakers, said Mr A, King, a leading operator in Melbourne, whose books on the big handicaps this year have been colossal. ‘ The double was not particularly bad for me. and I have been in a position to lay Beau VitC at the price. Believe me, I did not ever think that bookmakers would accept such a short price tb back a .horse, back. The Wellesley winner. Foreign Coin, and the double handicap -winner. Par Avion, stood out. and while . opinions may: be divided, my vote goes to Pgr Avion as the better of this pair. < There will be Improvers, such as Monetary, who impressed very .much with his finishing run in his first and only start, and Vanina is also a likely improver. Bird of Prey and Corn Prince are also improving, but for real class, such as is expected In early starts, like Beaulivre or Sir Beau, in the past two seasons, there was a disappointing lack. ' . ! . Wilson
While Beau Vite and Beaulivre are 1 in the spotlight for the Melbourne Cup another New Zealander in Wilson may not be out of the judge’s line at , the finish. He shapes like astayerand showed himself, in. form by a fourth in the Hotham Handicap, run in 2min SOJsec. It Is a matter of regret that Pandect got badly away In the Victoria; Derby, as another meeting with Lucrative would be full: of interest, not only .on . account of the classic honours, but also as a test for the Melbourne Cup. A Busy Day The fields at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting would have been rather on the light side but for the fact that nearly every horse on the card was started twice during the day. Kilrea • > Kilrea got a bad run in the Royal Handicap when she finished within half a length of the dead-heaters, Happy Locanda and Three Tens. She made amends by coming out again and winning the Electric Handicap At Addington Some interesting track work will take place at Addington this afternoon., when several trainers intend to step their horses out as part of the concluding preparation for the Metropolitan meeting. Kelson Eddy At Addington on Saturday Nelson Eddy, with a pacemaker, travelled over 12 furlongs outside the trestles in 3min 20 l-ssec. He cut but the last quarter in 30 l-ssec, and the full distance would be around a 3.14 gait. THE MELBOURNE CUP EIGHTIETH CONTEST TO-DAY GOOD FIELD ENGAGED BEAU, VITE’S BRIGHT PROSPECTS •v The Melbourne Cup, which will be run to-day, ranks as one of the few races that have achieved lasting and worldwide importance. At one time it ranked as the richest handicap in the world. It was, no doubt, the remarkable performance put up by Carbine in winning under 10.5 in record time that stamped him as the greatest horse ever foaled in the southern hemisphere. He was .ultimately sold -at 13,000 guineas to the Welbeck Stud to cross with daughters of the great St. Simon. The Duke of Portland thus saved the Musket line from extinction, as Carbine got Spearmint. Whose line has bred on with conspicuous success. New Zealand-bred horses and the mark they made on the pages of the Australian Stud Book are stamped all over the records of the Melbourne Cup. New Zealand has this year the great honour of supplying the two top-weights In the field, in Beau Vite and Beaulivre. Two other New Zealanders In Wilson and Tidal Wave are also in the field. Beau Vite and Beaulivre have both been very much in the limelight, and have proved themselves racehorses of superlative merit. Beau Vite will probably start favorite, and seems sure to make a bold bid for success, and so. will Beaulivre, but the element of luck was riot entirely absent from the latter's Caulfield Cup. Maikai, who follows the two top-weights, ran second last year with 7.11, but afterwards displayed' much improved form. ‘ He was also second In the Caulfield Cup. One of his notable performances was to beat Royal Chief in the Cumberland Plate, of one mile and three-quarters, in 2min 58sec, and in addition Maikai ran third with 9.6 in the Sydney Cup, and second in the A J.C. Plate, of two miles and a-quarter. Last year the Siegfried horse Wilson finished seventh in the Melbourne Cup with 7.7, finishing in front of Beau Vite 7.4. Wilson ran third in the A.J.C. Derby, and may have trained on to hold a chance .in this year’s Melbourne Cup. In fact, he may supply more danger to the top-weights than the classic winning three-vear-olds Lucrative and. Pandect, Tidal Wave is trained by J. T. Jamieson, and he has not been in the habit of start • Ing a horse In such a race from a sentimental point of view, but rather because it holds a winning chance. Flemington will be thronged with thousands of people who regard it as a sportsman’s Mecca to. which an annual pilgrimage must be - made. These sporting pil-. grims come from all parts of Australia to see the great race of the year. They go as sportsmen, but there are thousands and thousands of others to whom the Melbourne Cup Is only a pipe dream created by the gigantic sweepstake annually promoted on the race. These " pipe dreamers" are not at all-interested in a horse or a horse race, but are mostly wage-earners and shallow-salaried people whose only hope of w ea lth consists in the possibility of Dame Fortune smiling in their direction and so bestowing on them at least a share of the tered by the Goddess of Chance. Beau Vite Is a firm favourite for the Cup. but the odds; against him are greater than those backers are asked to accept. First.' this Is the eightieth Cup, and in 63 of them the favourite has been beaten Secondly. Beau Vite with His penalty ha« to carry 9.7, and only on seven occasions has a winner bad so much weight. Four of these heavily-loaded winners sueceeded in times when the pace was much slower than it is to-day. Archer, for instance, won the first, two Melbourne Cups with 9.7 and 10.2. but he took 3min 57sec and 3mln 47sec, time which to-day is regarded as poor for hurdles. In fact, Blackford 9.12 has cleared eight obstacles and covered the Cup course In 3mln 34isec Very many of the horses allotted welter-weights in past Cups-have declined . the engagement, but of the actual topweight starters only seven have won in fourscore years, and 75 per cent, of them have finished out of a place. Another thing which some Australians hold against Beau Vite Is that mo horse has ever won the Metropplltan-Melbourne Cup double, but many ’of these ' hoodoos have been broken during the last three years. Beau Vite will win if he is good enough, and he is a good horse.
The Favourite, Guarded The Melbourne correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald says that any doubt tha*»might.have been held aboutthe ability of Beau Vite to win the Mo'bourne Cup. for which he is firm favourite. must have been dispelled by his amazing win-.over High Caste in the Mackinnon. Stakes. There is absolute unanimity of opinion among newspaper racing experts that Beau Vite will win. Thers has not been such whole-hearted enthusiam for one horse since Phan Lap was selected successfully In 1930.. Remarkable precautions are being taken to guard Beau Vite sines, the plot to inlure him miscarried last week. He was accompanied to and from the course on Saturday by an attendant' and two armed guards. Behind him were two uniformed policemen and his owner, Mr Stewart, who last week was granted a licence to,carry a revolver. Policemen accompanied the horse to the mounting enclosure for the Mackinnon Stakes, and were there after the race to escort him back to his stall Offer for . Beau Vite Refused Mr. Ralph Stewart, the owner of Beau Vite, refused an American offer of £IO,OOO for the horse. . He said he was not for sale at any price. The Melbourne Cup starts at 3.30 p.m. Intermittent rain during the past 24 hours has had little effect on the track. A message-from Melbourne states that J. Thompson will ride Scientist in the Cup. Scientist is suffering from soreness as the result of a kick prior to the Derby start but his connections expect the colt to be fit enough to run. Morvren is suffering from a boil in the mouth and his starting in the Cup depends on to-day’s progress. If Gilltown runs In the Cup H. Skidmore will be the rider. M. McCarten has been engaged to ride Wilson and T. Unkovich, will ride Tidal Wave. Gold Salute is an acceptor for the Railway Highweight Handicap and the Yah'Yean Stakes but is an unlikely starter. Present Intentions are that High Caste will run in the Yan Yean Stakes. . The field for to-day’s event is as follows : MELBOURNE CUP First £5250 and gold cup valued at £2OO. RICCARTON NOTES TRACKS HARD (Special ro Dada Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 4. The weather was dull but fine for the work at Rlccarton this morning. The sky clouded over later, with a threat of rain. A. downpour would be welcomed by the trainers, as the tracks have become very hard, as a result of the recent dry spell. The inside of the trial grass track was open for fast work this morning, but it was not required, proceedings being restricted to light tasks on the plough and the sand, in preparation for galloping tomorrow, when the presence of many visiting horses will add to the interest. Aggravate was schooled by R. Beale over the pony hurdles which he jumped verv well. E. J. Ellis was out with Passaform and Confidant, who raced at Motukarara on Saturday, also the two-year-old, Dash o’ Dublin. Two other members of his team. Chirp and Craiglea, are due on Wednesday. Four of the Hogan team are here from Washdyke. They are Pink Lad, Leighnor and Twenty Grand, who raced at Motukarara. and Airline

Humphries came in for many warm congratulations on the success of his two charges, Dispense and Schoolgirl, at Motukarara on Saturday. They were his first wins since he took up training early this season.
