AID FOR BRITAIN
MR WILLKIE’S SUPPORT “PROMPT AND EFFECTIVE” DEMOCRACY IMPERILLED (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, Oct. 17. Mr Wendell Willkie, in a campaign speech urging further immediate aid to Britain, said: “I hope the New Dealers will forget that they are candidates for a third term and will act promptly and effectively. They conceivably may wish to delay aid in order to make a good impression for domestic political purposes, which would be reprehensible and trifling with Britain’s safety for the sake of an unworthy political trick. If it is desirable to send further aid it should be sent immediately within the limit of the laws. With Britain and democracy imperilled this is no time to play politically with deliveries of the equipment which strengthens Britain and raises the hopes of democracy throughout the whole world.” “ Rim of )ur Freedom ” Mr Willkie ad: “Britain is a heroine and the British people stand between America’s free institutions and barbaric philosophy and slavery to the State. As we stand 'here looking eastwards and westwards we find British people living on the rim of freedom. Reinforcement of that rim can be accomplished only by production.” Mr Willkie said that America contributed to the present world crisis. As a result of the New Deal America did not possess things that Britain needed and had no capacity to make those things. “We are faced with the awful choice .vhether to supply Britain or ourselves first.” He favoured aiding Britain at some sacrifice of their own defence programme. He characterised Mr Churchill as the most courageous and far-sighted statesman in the world.
