WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

The seventh birthday of the. Kyeburn Institute was held in conjunction with the flower show. Visitors were present from both Naseby and Waipiata Institutes. The president,. Mrs Helm, extended a welcome to the visitors and called upon Mrs Fowler, president of Naseby Institute, to light the candles. These were blown out by Mrs. Sparks, president of the Waipiata Institute, and the cake was cut by Mrs Griffiths, the oldest member, of the Kyeburn Institute.

The monthly meeting of the Tuapeka Mouth Institute was presided over by Mrs Hayman in the absence of the president, Mrs McLeod. The motto was “ The tongue is not steel yet-it cuts ’ and the roll call “My best friend in the kitchen.” Two new members were welcomed.” The meeting took the: form of a “gift" afternoon ■in honour of Miss J. Houston, who is to be married shortly. Items were given by Mrs Cowan and Mrs G. Houlston. The competitions resulted:— Ginger bread, Mrs C. Keenan 1; ginger nuts, Mrs C. Keenan 1; bloom. Mrs D. Brown and Mrs Latimer (equal) 1. The hostesses were Mesdames C. Lucan and Latimer.

Mrs W. Budge presided over the October meeting of the Benhar Institute. The motto was “ Go, put thy creed into action,” and the roll-call, “The first dress I remember wearing, and why”. Members responded splen-, didly with material gifts and monetary donations to the appeal for Christmas cheer for the patients at Makogai. The competitions resulted: Singlet made from 2oz wool (to be given to the Lady Galway Guild)— Mrs Buchanan 1, Mrs Todd- 2, Mrs S. Latta and Mrs G. Park (equal) 3;. bowl of spring flowers—Mrs Williams 1, Mrs Latta 2, Mrs H. Barnett 3. Mrs Keelty gave the “Golden Thread” reading. The hostesses were Mrs Todd and Miss Caskie. Mrs Anderson and Mrs Barnett were in charge of the social halfhour, when Mrs J. Park and Mrs Latta demonstrated on “Wool Cushions.” ¥ ¥ ¥ The monthly meeting of the Paretai Institute was held on Wednesday last, Mrs J. Aitkenhead presiding. The roll call was “A Maori Joke.” Mrs Dippie was appointed delegate to the halfyearly meeting at Balclutha. Goods were collected for despatch to the lepers. The market table had a good array of garden plants and these found a ready sale. The proceeds will go towards soldiers’ parcels. Mesdames T. Marshall and George Barr were the hostesses. ¥* * ■ Mrs Tansley presided at the October meeting of the Papatowai Institute. The motto was “Even this day will pass” and the roll call “ Your favourite: evening hobby.” Mrs F. Adams demonstrated an excellent method of lining a box or tin with silk. Members enjoyed a competition arranged by Mrs Goodsir. The hostesses were Mrs Jenks and Mrs Tubman.
