SEVERE STORM

WEST COAST FLOODS COMMUNICATIONS INTERRUPTED LITTLE DAMAGE REPORTED (Per United Press Association) GREYMOUTH. Oct. 17. Telegraphic and telephonic communication between the West Coast and the east coast was interrupted for five hours this evening in the vicinity of the Bealey following a 24 hours’ severe storm on both sides of the Alps. All rivers on the West Coast are in high flood to-night, but no damage is reported apart from a washout at Goat Creek bridge near the Otira road, which severed road communication with Canterbury. An extensive slip on the railway line to the Liverpool mine at Rewanui was cleared this evening and work will be resumed to-morrow. Heavy rain continued this evening on the Coast, but the danger of heavy flood damage is considered to have passed.
