FEELING IN THAILAND DEMANDS ON INDOCHINA VICHY’S FIRM ATTITUDE BANGKOK, Oct. 16. (Received Oct. 17, at 10 p.m.l While the newspapers are demanding armed action against Indochina, the police at Bangkok are suppressing anti-French demonstrations. The Cabinet has decided to continue negotiations. Discussions are being held with the French Minister pending the arrival of a delegation from Indo-China. The vernacular press, advocating armed action against Indo-China, describes the Vichy refusal to consider the Thai demands as a challenge to Thai. The newspaper Rashdra said the people’s patience was nearly exhausted. If nothing would be achieved peacefully, then an immediate declaration of war was necessary.
Six thousand tricycle and rickshaw men participated in a demonstration on Tuesday. Five hundred students paraded earlier A Hanoi message states that the Vichy Government has ordered Indo-China to resist any attempt by Thailand to violate the Cambodia and Laos boundaries. The French defences and Vice-admiral de Coux’s forthcoming visit to the Cambodian King Sisowath Monivonc arc interpreted as an assurance of French support for the Cambodians against Thailand.
