WIDE SWEEP

R.A.F. OPERATIONS INCREASED INTENSITY WIDESPREAD TARGETS DOCKS AND OIL CENTRES (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 17. (Received Oct. 17. at 11.50 p.m.) In spite of unfavourable weather, bombers of the Royal Air Force again attacked targets in Germany and occupied territory last night. Important oil refinery plants in central Germany were again among the targets bombed. An indication of the widespread nature of the R.A.F. attacks was provided by the Berlin radio last night which announced that certain radio stations would not in future broadcast after dark, and listeners were advised to tune in to stations in the east and south of Germany. The naval dockyards at Kiel and the oil supply centres inside Germany were the principal objectives of the R.A.F. heavy bomber squadrons on Tuesday night. Many other targets in Germany and German-occupied

territory included aluminium fac tories, docks, railways, and aero' dromes.

The raid on Kiel was an almost continuous series of attacks lasting for four hours, in which tons of high explosives were dropped on dockyards and dirct hits were scored on a jetty, and also on a marine academy. The Deutschewerke shipbuilding yard and dockyards southeast of the main jetty were repeatedly straddled, while nine heavy bombs burst along the western border of the Germania yard. One salvo apparently struck a fuel storage plant and started a huge fire, which lit up the targets for further attackers. Other raiders- struck deeply into Germany and bombed important oil refineries and storages at Magdeburg, Gelsenkirchen, and Saltzbergen, as well as over 20 different railway „entres. Other objectives included targets at Grevenbrotch, Cologne, Schonebeck, Neuhaldensleben, Lunen, and Dusseldorf. and also docks at Hamburg and Duisberg. One raider directly hit a supply train near Lunen. Fires broke out in the railway yards at Dusseldorf and Neuss. Raiders which -Hacked Antwerp in the early morning hit warehouses and railways.
