Tj New Zealand Cup Meeting Friday of next week is general entrv day for the New Zealand Cup meeting Donadea Since racing over hurdles at Geraldine it is reported that Donadea. has been an improvement in his schooling.

The Buzzer The Buzzes was not nominated for the Wellington meeting, no doubt with the object; of avoiding a possible penalty- for the New Zealand . Cup The Raker

It is reported that W. F. Ellis has been retained to ride The Raker in the New Zealand Cup. The Raker was not handicapped for the second day at Wingatui and appears to be fairly well treated at Timaru.

An Improvement Both •. Rebel Mate and Spanish Lad showed Unproved form on the second day at Wingatui. Rebel Mate should be improved for hia engagement at Timaru on Saturday.

Dictate and Wardress When Dictate and Wardress met in the Teschemaker Handicap last season the latter won with 7.131 In 2min 4 3-ssec. and the former ran unplaced with 8.13. They meet this year at a difference of 31b. A Classic Winner

Sir Cameron, the winner of the Great Northern Guineas, cost 220gns as a yearling and was got by Posterity—Mirabelle 11, the dam of Theio, a winner of the A.J.C. Derby, Victoria Derby and Caulfield Guineas.

Mungatoon The Musketoon gelding Mungatoon, who is engaged at Timaru, has not raced since the season of 1937-38. His latest winning efforts were put up at the Timaru autumh meeting, when he won the Timaru Cup with 7.5 and the South Canterbury Handicap with 8.0. both in heavy going A Sale Note

The Night Raid mare Night Moth, foaled in 1930, is advertised for sale. She is the dam -of Night Scout. Night Moth was got by Night Raid from Luthy. by LucullUs—Lisp, by Demosthenes—Savanna, by Stepniak, and traces back to the successful Mermaid taproot. Lucullus mares have produced Majority, Princess Doreen, Gladynev. Lucella (dam of The Begum, the dam of High Caste, Stretto and Atvakur), Queen March, Royal March, Nucleus (dam of Gay Circle) and other good producing mares. Leopardstown

Leopardstown won at Geraldine with 9.3, beating Master Dingle 10.4, Sir Frederick 10.0, Jewish Lad 10.10. and Crack o’ Dawn.9.o-ln 2mln 59sec, or six seconds faster than the time put up by Recollection on the first day of the meeting. Leopardstown has 9.13 at Timaru, and meets Jewish Lad on 101 b worse terms Crack o’ Dawn, who displayed improvement at Wingatui. may be selected to provide the most serious opposition to Leopardstown. Gold Salute Various prices are said to have been paid for Gold Salute. After his recent win an Australian writer said; “ Mr Alan Cooper, one of Australia’s most spectacular racing men. "Won a fortune when the ex-New Zealand horse Gold Salute scored in the -ToOrak Handicap at Flemington on Saturday. ’ I paid £9OOO for him. but I’ve got it back and more.’ said Mr Cooper after the race. Gold Salute scored easily by a length and a-quarter from Historian, with True Flight third. After Mr Cooper’s commission, he announced to all who cared:to listen that he considered the horse ‘a ■ certainty There was a rush to follow his lead and Gold Salute soon firmed.. The demand, for him was so consistent that at the final of betting few bookmakers were prepared to lay a wager against, him at any price.. The cash payout after.-the race lasted 40 minutes, and 'nod’ bets v/cre colossal. One prominent bookmaker estimated that the vine paid out an aggregate of £35.000. Mr Cooper was undoubtedly the hipest winner, bui the race was also profitable to Mr George Tahcred, brother of High Caste’s owner Gladynev

A plunge on the much-discussed New Zealander Gladynev. enigma of this year s Caulfield Cuo, misfired in the Herbert Power Handican at F'emington (says an Australian writer). Gladynev missed a place after having had every chance, and all that can be said now for his Caulfield Cup orosoects is that he should be helned considerably by a dron of lOlb to 6.7 in his weight. Rex Felt finished strongly to win from L'Aielon and Earlv Bird, and as he carried 51b more than his Caulfield Cup weight he has firmed in the market for the latter race. The demand for Gladynev caught many bookmakers napping, and they laid as much as double figures against him early After a number of substantial bets had been laid, however, he firmed to fives and started at half the original Quotation. No excuse was possible for his failure Bartle lumped him awav smartly from an outside position, and Gladvnev had the box seat behind Earl-" Bird froir the mile post He was still in second position rounding the turn into the straight, but failed where he was expected to shine ■ Instead of fighting on. he'lost ground over the last furlong, and finished almost in line with Mac Rob, about a length behind the third horse and two lengths behind the winner. The race may improve Gladynev who was sweating freelv before the start and, although he failed to see 10 furlongs out, his substantial drop in weight might yet enable him to give a good account of himself over the additional two furlongs of the Caulfield Cup.
