CHICAGO FIRM’S SUCCESS NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING After 15 years in the retail business, the Chicago firm of Sears, Roebuch and Co. is probably the largest buyer ot daily newspaper advertising in tae United States. The company’s advertisements are published in 893 daily newspapers in every part of the United Stales.
Before February 2, 1925. the company was the biggest mail order house sn the United States. On that date, it opened a department store. By 1930, it was operating 316 retail stores, and today it has 560 retail stores. The president of the company. Mr Thomas J. Carney, recently said: "Newspaper advertising has been the sine qua non of our retail promotion. We depended on the daily papers from the day when our first retail store was opened, and we have maintained a pretty consistent ratio of newspaper advertising expenditure to total volume from that day to this. ... It has
been repeatedly demonstrated that any success that we have had can be traced to newspaper promotion.”
