ALEXANDRA Queen Carnival There was an excellent attendance In the Town Hal! on Friday, when Mr J. F Himburg, of Dunedin, led a community sing in aid of the Air Force Queen funds. Mr Himburg had associated with him Messrs A. Jones and J. Robertson and Misses Gwenda Burt and Muriel Caddie, with Mr Stewart Bringans at the piano. As a result of the effort £65 was raised. A gala day will be held on November 2. Prior to the community sing, the Alexandra Pipe Band made its first appearance on the streets in its newly acquired uniforms, in appreciation of what Mr J. F. Himburg had done to help the band previously. Valedictory On the eve of his relinquishing the position of raceman for the Public Works Department for the Earnscleugh irrigation scheme, Mr J. E. Thompson, who has filled the position for many years, was entertained by the irrigators in the Earnscleugh Hall, Mr E. J. Iversen. on their behalf, mads a presentation to Mr Thompson of a fireside chair with their best wishes for a happy retirement. Others also spoke of the efficiency and impartiality with which the guest of the evening had carried out his duties. Mr Thompson made a suitable reply.
ROXBURGH Air Force Queen The combined concert and community sing held in aid of funds for the Air Force Queen was very successful and the funds benefited to the extent of £22 Golf On Saturday a novel golf match vyas played at Roxburgh between women and men. The match caused much amusement, and it is hoped that it will be made an annual fixture. The game resulted in a win for the women. The course is in excellent order and should provide good summer golf. Bowls The opening of the bowling green took place on Saturday. The green is in perfect order and the many members and visitors from. the Miller's Flat Club thoroughly enjoyed playing on it. Personal Mr John McMahon, a former member of the local Post Office staff, who has been in the Canterbury district, has enlisted in the Royal Navy as a wireless telegraphist. Mr Woodhouse, of the Roxburgh railway staff, has been transferred to Invercargill.
MILLER’S FLAT Lawn Tennis Club At the annual meeting of the Miller’s Flat Lawn Tennis Club, the following officers were appointed:—President, Mr S. Youngson; vice-presidents, Messrs T. Stone and J. A. Campbell; secretary and treasurer. Mr S. C. Vercoe; club captain, Mr N. Mosley; vice-captain, Miss E. Campbell: auditor. Mr L. Faigan: trustee, Mr T. Faigan: committee—President, vice-pre-sidents. secretary, captains, and Mrs Mudge, Miss L. Stockhill, Messrs C. Orr, A. Stone, and M. Sheehy. The opening was held on Saturday, when a Yankee tournament was held, the winners 'being Miss L. Stockdill and Mr N. Mosley. Patriotic Committee
The Miller’s Flat Patriotic Committee held a successful dance and euchre party in aid'of the-Air Force Queen’on StTfliG" day. Prizes for the cards were won by Mrs M, Armitage and Mr R. Campbell, The dance was well attended and everyone enjoyed the music supplied by Mr D. Bews, who was assisted by Messrs S. Dwyer and C. Orr. The sum of £9 was raised.
