BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

ANNUAL ATHLETIC SPORTS SATISFACTORY STANDARD PREVAILS B. E. MACKINTOSH’S SUCCESSFUL DAY The weather was fine and pleasant yesterday for tire annual athletic sports of the Otago Boys’ High School, although a strong north-west wind affected to some extent the competition, which was, however at all times keen and interesting Held at the Littiebourne Ground, the meeting attracted a larger crowd of spectators than usual, and, run with great efficiency, it must be regarded as one of the most successful yet held. One of the features of the afternoon was, a march past of the boys, which showed clearly that the physical well-being of the boys is being carefully studied and their training well' carried out. To the music of the school trumpet and bugle band, the boys circuited the ground and then marched past a saluting base where the Mayoress (Mrs A. H. Allen), and the rector (Mr H. P Kidson) took the salute The boys then formed up in front of the attractive natural Brand stand on the east side of the ground, where Mrs Alien presented the trophies won at the sports. A high standard of athletics prevailed in both championship and handicap events and large fields provided interesting competition throughout the day. The division of the senior and intermediate championships into three sections again showed its benefit to the competitors. In the senior championship, T. C. Timpany won the sprints 1 cup E B. Seddon the distance cup, and L. -A. Fraser the field ■cup, .all three boys showing considerable promise. The sprints were closely contested in the intermediate championship, and the cup finally went to R. W Philllpps by a narrow margin. D. -J McCall won the distance cup. and Philllpps completed a successful day by taking the field events honours. Philllpps'

broke the broad jump record with a leap of 18ft Bin, but his performance will not. be recognised as a record on account of the strong assisting wind. Probably the most outstanding athlete competing was B. E. Mackintosh, a first year boy, who won no fewer than five events in the junior championship, Possessing an extremely easy and promising style. Mackintosh won all the fiat events comfortably in fast times, except in the half-mile, which he won easily. He shows promise of going far In athletics. Competition was particularly keen in the handicap events and many good performances were recorded, In fact, the standard In these-, open . events! seemed higher than usual, „.
