EDUCATION BOARD AFFAIRS iiIISFAGTORY DENTAL TREATMENT It was reported to the monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board, over which Mr James Wallace presided yesterday, that 162 of the 204 schools in Ot&go were receiving treatment at 30 dental clinics. In addition, several Private schools were catered for. ‘'very satisfactory.” was the general comment of members. , , Training College Quota The department advised that the Training College quota for the Otago district next year had been fixed at 69. compared with 65 this year. The number of applicants is 129—41 males and 88 females. Intimation was received also that specialist studentships will be awarded for 1941 in physical education, music, arts and crafts, speech therapy • and education of the Maori. On account of the necessity of building up an adequate staff of specialists in nhysical education, it has been decided to limit the fields of education in which speciialist studentships are to be provided next year. Living Allowance ; . The. department intimated that the cost*bf-living allowance of £l3 a year recently granted by the Government will be paid to full-time teachers, probationary assistants, and training college students who are in receipt of salsary not exceeding £335 a year There, will be certain modifications in respect of those in receipt of more than £335 a year and training college students under 18 years of age. The allowance will operate from August 12, and the arrears will be paid with the October salary. ; v ’ School Building Work '

In the lastmentioned instance, the board’s share of the cost, including new outhouses, will be £2ll. Commissioners Appointed « Messrs A. Miller and T. W.
