BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

CATTLE PRICES HIGHER SHEEP VALUES EASE For the Burnside stock sale yesterday a large yarding of 328 head of fat cattle came forward, but prime heavy cattle were in shorter supply, the bulk of the entry being made up of prime mediumweights, with a large proportion of light and unfinished cows and heifers. Prices for extra prime heavy cattle remained firm, but, with the assistance of several outside orders, prime medium-weights showed an increase of from 10s to 15s per head, while light and unfinished cattle sold firm on last week’s rates. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £25 7s Gd prime heavy bullocks £2O 12s 6d to £22 17,s Gd. prime medium bullocks £l6 12s Gd to £lB 12s Gd, light from £l2 2s Gd to £ls 12s Gd. extra prime heavy cows and heifers to £2l. prime heavy cows and heifers £l4 7s Gd to £l6 2s Gd. prime medium cows and heifers £ll 12s Gd to £l3 2s Gd, and light from '£9 2s Gd Only 50 head of store cattle were yarded. With the exception of one pen of yearling steers, which failed to find a buyer at

auction, the entry was made up of cows and heifers. Prices over the sale showed no change on the rates rilling last week. Fewer than 30 dairy cows were offered. The yarding generally was made up of poorer quality sorts, which met with a dragging sale. Up to £9 was obtained for the best close-to-profit sort penned. A big entry' of 1985 sheep came forward. Ewes were in the majority, some excellent consignments being noticeable, although this class also contained many pens of light and indifferent quality. Woolly wethers were represented by mostly light to medium grades, with very few prime heavy-weights. A few lots of shorn sheep were included, the wethers ranging from medium to extra heavy, and the ewes medium to prime. The sale commenced with values Is lower, but, owing to lack of outside competition, lower rates had to be accepted over the latter part of the market. Prices generally may be quoted 2s to 3s easier for all classes. Prime woolly wethers made 43s to 465, medium woolly wethers 37s to 40s Gd, light and unfinished wethers from 32s Gd, extra heavy shorn wethers to 395, prime shorn wethers 33s to 375, extra heavy young woolly ewes to 45s 9d, heavy woolly ewes 35s Gd to 39s Gd, medium woolly ewes 30s to 335, light woolly ewes 24s to 28s Gd, prime shorn ewes 27s 6d. and medium shorn ewes 245.

A slightly larger entry of 57 fat lambs came forward. Competition was fairly well maintained, although prices were lower by 2s to 3s compared with recent high rates. A medium yarding of 142 head ot fa 1 pigs was penned. Porkers and baconers made up the entry in equal proportions, prices for the former showing an increase of 5s per head on last week’s rates, while porkers also sold at an advance of 3s per head. Store pigs had an entry of 74. which met with a keen demand at prices, showing an advance of 4s to 5s on those ruling last week. v
