QUEEN CARNIVAL

AIR FORCE CANDIDATE “It was like a tonic the way people shelled out,” said the Mayor (Mr L. J. K. Familton) on his return to Oamaru from Omarama, where ,a patriotic concert was held on Saturday night in aid of the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt). Rabbiters runholders, and musterers joined together to make the appeal a wonderful success. The frying was quite spontaneous. A pound note brought about £4O, sponge cakes realised 10s each, and rhubarb sold by the ounce.” As chairman of the Patriotic Committee. Mr Familton expressed appreciation of Omaramas effort in raising £ISC at the concert. Mr Arthur Munro was in the chair, and appropriately thanked the concert party which had come out from Oamaru to provide such an enjoyable entertainment. The members of the party were Mesdames G. Donaldson (accompanist) and Glass, Misses Appleby and B. Macfie. and Messrs J. Spear. C. Smith, and Pheloung. The children's festival at Oamaru on Saturday is expected to attract a capacity audience in the Opera House. The programme will include a children’s fancy dress parade, a search for talent, and a mannequin parade. In addition to the functions for this week already published, Cromwell is having a big gala day on Saturday next. An excellent programme has been arranged, and all that is desired is a fine day. • The Balclutha Golf Club staged a series of competitions in aid of the Air Force Queen last Saturday. These attracted a large crowd of players, and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. The financial returns have not been completed, but it is expected a satisfactory sum will result. ARMY QUEEN ACTIVITIES In order to assist in the promotion of the candidature of the Army Queen, five princesses, each representing a section of. Queen Airini’s _ supporters, have been selected to assist in their own particular spheres. Their first public appearance was on Friday evening, when they accompanied the Army Queen’s float in the carnival procession. They were officially presented • to Queen Airini on Saturday night last at the Town Hall, and this ceremony met with a very enthusiastic reception from the large assemblage. Each princess has an energetic committee which will be active for the duration of the campaign. Keen competition is evidenced in an endeavour to contribute in the most tangible way possible to the success of the Army Queen. The choice j of princesses has been a very happy one in each case and these charming young women have pledged themselves to do all in their power to further the interests of this patriotic appeal. The princesses and the sections they represent are as follows:—Princess Barbara ; Mitchell (banks and insurance), Princess Betty. Brown» (public service), Princess Millicent Baxter (foodstuff and associated manufacturers). Princess Stella Johnson (combined printing trade), and Princess Daphne Larson (boot, clothing, woollen, soft goods, and furriers). To-morrow night the West Harbou: Patriotic Committee is presenting at the Coronation Hall. Ravensbournc. three one-act plays by members of the Repertory Society and the Dunedin Playbox Society. Between the plays musical items will be presented Quee> e Airini will be present. This week the dug-out in the Octagon is in charge of the Army Queen Committee and to-day will _ be controlled by the wives of dentists. Tomorrow women musicians will staff the dug-out . „ The members of the South Dunedin Army Queen Ladies’ Committee are conducting a jam drive this morning, and to-morrow morning. A house-to-house canvass is being made and housewives are asked to assist the Queen Carnival effort bv giving a jar of jam ' . • _ , On Saturday night the Railways Goods Sheds Social Committee will hold a dance in the Road Services Social Hall in the bus terminal building. Proceeds of the dance will be devoted to Princess Bettv the public service princess The handsome silver cup which has been presented as the trophy in the bathing beauty competition to be held in conjunction with “ Ye Old Englishe Fayre” is now on display in the window of the Army Queen shop in Princes street, A feature of the Fayre will be the monster tug-of-war event, which is to be held on the stage of the Main Town Hall at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Six men’s teams will compete and there is a trophy for the winners. As part of the Army Queen’s efforts in next Saturday’s “ Old English Fayre,” the weekly Army Queen Dance in the Town Hall should provide plenty of entertainment for dancers and spectators, for apart from excellent arrangements for dancing, there will be a tug-of-war on the stage, which, while it will not interfere with dancing, should prove of great interest to those attending the function. NAVY QUEEN ARRANGEMENTS The Navy Queen Committee has announced that the auction sale set down for Friday in the Winter Show buildings is now to be held in Burns Hall, in Burlington street, as it is felt this is

a more convenient place for the public. A wide range of articles is to be offered at the suction but no reserve will be nlaced on any of them.
