MALTING BARLEY

APPEAL BY MINISTER INCREASED ACREAGE IN CANTERBURY POOR RESPONSE IN NORTH ISLAND (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 15. A substantial increase in the area of malting barley sown this season is indicated in the estimates of acreage. A conservative total is 3U,000 acres, compared with about 22,000 acres last season. This figure does not take into account a possible increase in the area between now and the end of the month of barley sown on land prepared for wheat, which was not put in because of bad weather. About 15,000 acres of this land is available, though only a portion will be sown in barley. Of the Dominion total approximately two-thirds is grown in Canterbury. It is reported that there has been a disappointing response to the appeal by the Minister of Marketing, who asked North Island growers to sow 25.000 acres of feed barley at a fixed price of 3s 6d. This price is apparently considered too low.
