LAWRENCE Queen Carnival The amount raised at Lawrence on behalf of the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) is now £220 2s 4d. This does not include the stock drive, which has just been commenced. This year the blooms have been of a particularly high standard, and have created favourable comment from leading horticulturists.

QUEENSTOWN Waste Metals The committee set up by the Queenstown Borough Council to collect scrap metals In the town met last Friday, when Mr W Mclnnes was appointed chairman, tt was decided to make drives on October 23 in the Eastern terrace, and on October 26 on the Western terrace. The Boy Scouts would be asked to make the collection and to deposit the metal at a convenient dump for collection by cars. The school children would also be asked to assist by bringing metals to the school The main depots would be the council office and the New Zealand Railways depot. OMAKAU Vincent Cricket Association The annual report of the Vincent Cricket Association states that the 1939-40 season was in every way successful. The championship was won by Lowburn for the second year in succession. A Vincent team took part In the Country Week fixtures at Dunedin and acquitted itself with credit. The accounts show that, financially, the association is in a sound position. Reference is made to the effect of the war on country cricket, and the executive will do all in its powei to keep the game in Vincent alive until normal conditions prevail. Obituary A well-known and respected resident of the Lauder district in the person of Mr John Leask died at his residence at Lauder on October 7. The youngest son of the late Mr William Leask, a pioneer settler of the Blacks district, the late Mr Leask was born at Blacks No. 1 (now Ophir) in 1873. After assisting his father in farming Mr Leask later' took up a farm on his own account at Becks. Mr Leask did not take any active part in public affairs, but in his younger days he had been a keen sportsman. He was one of the first members of the Blacks Cricket Club, of which he was probably the best all-rounder, especially as a bowler, and played a large part in helping to maintain the club’s supremacy in Central Otago cricket over a number of years Mr Leask was also a first-class shot, and carried off many prizes at local pigeon matches. Mr Leask is survived by his widow and a family of four sons —Messrs William, Janies. Stanley and Douglas Leask—and one daughter. Joyce Leask.
