"I hope the British Government will ■■ not make the mistake of interfering with the freedom of the press, or the free expression of opinion so long as there is nothing subversive in the views expressed," said Mr E. Shinwell, ' the Labour M.P., in a recent speech. "A free press is the nation's safety valve. To suppress opinions would leave the public without effective • means of dealing with rumours or affirming- sound criticism of Government policy. That, as we have already seen, did more harm than good in those countries which have fallen a victim to Hitler."
