AUSTRALIAN NEWS

RAIN IN NEW SOUTH WALES WATER SHORTAGE RELIEVED SYDNEY, Sept. 29. The heavy showers which fell in the reservoir catchment area yesterday and to-day are likely to afford some relief to the metropolitan water shortage. The Water Board chairman, however, warns householders and business interests that additional restrictions are being imposed next week prohibiting the automatic flushing of sanitary and similar conveniences. Last week-end’s rain was of no appreciable value to the city’s reservoirs. Violent squalls accompanied to-day’s rain, the wind velocity reaching 65 miles. The wind unroofed a building at Mascot aerodrome. blew down a high wall in Auburn suburb, and caused extensive and minor damage in other suburbs.
