Early Speed Miss Baffles, the winner of the Avondale Stakes, was got by Baffles, a halfbrother to Manna, the sire of Man’s Pal. Entail Entail’s rider, J. Wadley, on Saturday was struck in an eye by a clod of earth early in the race, and afterwards could not handle his mount. The Buzzer Last season The Buzzer did very little racing, and now appears to be sound, but the test of that will come later. , A Royal Gift ■“ ■ ;,v -V ' The RoyfiT Calcutta: Turf Club has decided to giye the equivalent‘ of £BB,OOO to- the: East-’lndia Fund for British war services—a sum sufficient, it is thought, to pay for a flight of Spitfire fighters. Bred In New Zealand Two New Zealand-bred horses .were successful at Victoria Park, Sydney, recently. One was Foxhall, by Colossus from Hunts Up, and the other Beaucaire, by Beau Pere from Timid Lucullus Lad also ran in the race won by Beaucaire, ridden by A. E. Ellis. McCarten was on the winner. Compensation The fire that destroyed the totalisator house on the Kurow racecourse was really ■a blessing in, disguise. Last week the totalisator turnover amounted to £l3,is«i 10s—about double the total registered at the last meeting held on the Kurow course. Cup Ride Hawke's Bay reports state that W. J. Mudford,' who rode Yours Truly to win the New Zealand Cup last year, has been engaged this year for Areas. Mudford is under retainer to Mr W, McA. Duncan after his employer, trainer Alf. Quinlivan, and Mr Duncan lias Taurangi in the Cup. Mudford would therefore be re*quired for her unless released. Watapat I Among the juveniles showing promise in Melbourne is Watapai, who is to carry the colours of Messrs G. J. Barton and W. Balloch. The colt was passed in at the Trentham sales at 325gns, but subsequently was taken by Mr Barton at an enhanced price. He was bred by Messrs Mackenzie Brothers, of Tlmaru, who had previously sold two of Victory Bond’s progeny to Mr Barton. Victory Bond is also the dam of Tray Bond, Fair Weather. Silver Bond, and Bursary. Back to Business j After being away from racing for some time. W. H. Jones Intends to resume ridr ing again, and he has been granted a jockey’s licence by the New Zealand Racing Conference. Jones was a most successful light-weight some seasons ago, and as he is an experienced rider, who can still go to scale light, he should not lack mounts at the coming meetings. A Nigger Choir It is reported that F. W. Ellis has seven of Nigger Minstrel’s stock in his stable —six of them being novices. It sounds like a nigger choir, and reminds one of ” Ten Little Nigger Boys ” and " The Minstrel Boy to the turf has gone, in the ranks of racers you will find him." sung by Pope and Sayles, Wallace King, the, Fisks,, and other cbony-hued vocalists famous in their day.
Well urea ; Green Gabies, the Winner of the Trial Stakes at the Kurow meeting, is an attractively bred filly. She was got by Vermeer from Anacre, by Acre—St. Annes, by St. Savin—Conceit, by Bonlform—Lady Wayward 11, by Ladas. Vermeer was got by Solarlo—Pilgrim’s Rest, by Chaucer — Meadow Rue, by Saniform—Lily of the Valley, by Martason. Airline - The Surveyor colt Airline has gradualy acquired a more seasoned appearance and shapes like a stayer. He was got by Surveyor from Maid of the Air, by The Ace—Kenilworth Maid, by Kenilworth — Miss Gunning by Orzil —Carinthia, by Gosoon —Trieste, by Chester—Tempe, by Somnus from White and Blue, a ■ mare bred in Germany in 1876. Gold Medallist. Golden Lily, Titan, The Sailor Prince, Revenue (one of the hottest favourites to win a Melbourne Cup), and Carllta are well-known members of the tribe. Gladynev The Musketoon gelding Gladynev, who on Wellington Cup form was “ pitch - forked ” into the Caulfield Cup. has been suffering defeats in recent races, but his backers need not experience anxiety' on that account as the distances have been too short to suit a stayer. Scientist 1 • .. ' The Marconigram colt Scientist, who won the Hawkesbury Grand Handicap, and is now in the public eye as a possibility for the A.J.C. Derby, cost 85 guineas when sold as a foal at foot with his dam. They were purchased on behalf of Dr E. G. Carroll, who presented the foal to Mrs Carroll. Bimhil, the dam of Scientist, was got by St. Alwyne—Bibble, by FlavusCollarene. by Abercorn—Marchesa. by St. Albans. If Scientist wins the A.J.C. Derby Mrs Carroll will be the first woman to win the classic Cough is interesting to read that a two-year-old suffering from a cold has been getting through fast work on the track. If a horse with important engagements' In England coughed it would echo from one end of the land to the other. In this country a horse suffering from colds and strangles has been seen on the tracks and using sandrolls without restrictions, whereas they should not be allowed on a course., Last season a more-than-useful handicap; horse contracted strangles by contact on a racecourse, and is now useless for racing purposes. Battle Song V The fact that the Musket line horse Battle Song has safely arrived in New Zealand and is now installed at Mr George Kain’s stud at Oran recalls the fact that the late Mr G. G. Stead, the most suc.cessful owner ever identified with the turf, owed no small amount of his success to its representatives. Amongst the great winners under; the “yellow jacket, black cap” were Maxim, Scot’s Grey, Medallion, Stepniak, Bluefire, Uniform, Multiform, MenschikofT, Orloff, Nightfall, Noctuiform, Boniform, Bombshell, Medallion, Conqueror, Tolstoi, Romanoff, Golden Lily, Munjeet, Armlet, Motto, Bellicent. Isolt, Machine Gun, Bloodshot, Screw Gun, Rose Argent. Gold Medallist, King Log, Sungod, Lebel, Royal Artillery, Cuneiform. Melinite, Count Witte, and others of lesser note. Mr Stead did not achieve such great success with the Musket line because he was a one-ideal man, but because he realised its value and benefited by the fact. Mr Stead also owned Trenton when he won the Canterbury Champagne Stakes, and endeavoured to buy Carbine as a two-year-old. It ranks as one of the most interesting facts In racing history that New Zealand’s most successful owner should achieve such great success ; with the same line of blood. Of course, he did not hold cast-iron ideas about breeding, and “many other sire lines were represented under the colours, but if there is any truth in the saying “that nothing succeeds like success. Mr Stead blazed a great trail through the Stud Book and Turf Register that led to the winning post.

Dick Travis It is reported that the Travis Axworthy gelding Dick Travis got entangled in a barb wire fence last week and had to be destroyed. Statuette Amongst the promising young pacers in work at Addington is Statuette, a three-year-old filly by New Derby from Native Queen, by Native King—Rawene, by Albert Victor from a Judge Beldon mare New Derby was got by Globe Derby— Greta, by Wildwood Junior from Atwood’s dam, by Prince Imperial from a thoroughbred mare. Transferred Frisco Boy, winner of the All Aged Stakes, 1937, under M. B. Edwards, has been transferred to J. B. Pringle’s stable at Addington. Frisco Boy was bred by Mr W. J. Morland, and is a brother to Frisco Lady, which won the New Zealand Sapling Stakes in 1935. Frisco Boy was purchased before he raced by Messrs J. E and' H. L. August, of Wellington, and was prepared for his early contests by M. B Edwards, under whom he won several races—mostly over sprint distances Diversion Few trotters in Diversion’s class have as much speed as the daughter of Rey de Oro and Escapade. She was first raced as a pacer, but during the past year she has been given mixed tasks. She goes solidly at the trotting gait in her training work, but makes a break in her races. There are signs of improvement, and there is a prospect of her making good as a trotter. It is only a question of her repeating her private exhibitions to win two or three races on end

RICCARTON NOTES
WINTRY WEATHER <Special ro Dailv Times) ■ CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 30. Although a good deal of rain fell at Riccarton on Saturday, the weather cleared In the afternoon and the tracks had dried up well when the early arrivals put in an appearance this morning. Some of the horses did their useful pace work on the sand, while others went on the plough, which was in good order. Later in the' morning rain set in again, and there was a great change after breakfast, when heavy rain fell. As a result, most of the late division stayed at home, only about half a dozen horses being taken to the course, and their tasks were very light. The atmosphere was cold, and the indications were far from promising. Mrs J. Campbell has her team coming on well, and she has a busy time ahead. Willie Win, though not very forward yet. may be raced at the South Canterbury meeting. Wardress, who is making good progress, is also booked for the same race, while Retrogression and Ageratum will accompany them. The three firstnamed may then go to Trentham, along with My raid. Three maidens are included in the team that Mrs J. Campbell has in work. Ageratum. who is to start off at Washdyke, is a four-year-old by Myosotls from the Gay Lad mare Velocium, dam also of Night Hawk. He is owned by his trainer, and he shapes like repaying her for a patient policy, as he has been galloping freely. Delice, a four-year-old gelding by Robespierre from a Tea Tray mare, has been hampered by unsoundness, He seems better now, and he may be raced at Rangiora Myraid, a three-year-old by Myosotis from the Night Raid mare Miss Nightraid, has grown into a good-looking horse. He is booked for Trentham, his iady owner being a resident of Wellington, and he should pay his way this season. Scarteen, who is a delicate horse, lost condition recently but he is building up again, and he should be ready to show form at the Riccarton carnival, prior to which he will have a race at Motukarara Night Hawk, sold last week to Mr J. D. Simpson, is expected to leave in a few days for Auckland, where his new owner resides. He is now five years old, and he looks ready to make an early return to winning form Puella, a three-year-old filly by Bulandshar from the Limond riiare Monette, dam also of Centrepoise, was given a couple of races last spring and then was put aside. H. R. Davies has had her in work again for some time, and she has started lately on short sprints, in which she has shown some promise. She is not being hurried but she should do good service for Mr R L. McCormack later in the season. W. E. Hancock has his pair of two-year-olds. owned by the Otago sportsman Mr J P. Herlihy, looking well, and they have shaped smartly in some short sprinting tasks. A chestnut filly is by Solicitor General from March Off. dam of Dismiss and Gold Boa, two very speedy gallopers: and a bay filly is by Man’s Pal from Universal, a half-sister to Queen of Song, while Universal is the dam of Greenbank, a useful galloper in J. B. Pearson’s stable. Each of these youngsters is due for a race before the Riccarton carnival, one at Rangiora and the other at Motukarara. When The Raker captured the Kurow Cup he was the first of the South Island candidates for the New Zealand Cup to win a race after the declaration of the weights He has the minimum, 7.0, in the Riccarton race, and he can win a lot more money before he renders himself liable to rehandlcap. The penalty condition for the Cup does not operate till a horse has won a race of the value of £250 or races of the collective value of £SOO.
