LAWRENCE Queen Carnival On Friday evening a very successful concert and community sing was conducted by the 4ZB party in flic Lawrence Town Hall. Items were rendered by Miss Reta Holmes, Messrs Barron Harrison, " Spud " Murphy. Jimmy McFarlane, and R. Tuapeka Agricultural Society The annual meeting of the ITiapeka Agricultural Society was held on Saturday evening, Mr W. F. Labes presiding. The election of officers resulted;—-President, Mr W F. Labes; vice-presidents. Messrs J. A. Robertson and J. H. Robertson; secretary, Mr F. F Farm: auditor, Mr P F A. Robertson, On the motion of Messrs R C. Hall and S. Glrvan, it was decided to hold no shows during the war period. It was resolved to give £lO to the fund for the relief of distress caused by the bombing of London. Young Farmers’ Club A meeting of the Lawrence Young Farmers’ Club was held on Wednesday evening Traffic Inspetctor Ireton delivered a most instructive and informative address on “ Rules of the Road and Causes of Road Accidents." Three new members were elected.

Tuapeka Bowling Club At the annual meeting of the Tuapeka Bowling Club, Mr A, L. Hart presided over a good attendance of members. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr E. M. Stevens; vice-president. Mr W. Duthie; secretary and treasurer, Mr B S. Fulton; selectors —Messrs H E Pitt R C. Moore, and W. Duthie. It was decided to ask the Milton Club to arrange for two of its members to act for Lawrence on the South Otago Bowling Centre. Mr Wylie was reappointed greenkeepei for the season. Subscriptions for the year were fixed at: Men. £2 2s 6d; beginners, £1: women, 17s (id; beginners, 10s 6d Methodist Bazaar The annual bazaar ot the Methodist Ladies’ Guild, held on Friday last, proved very successful, although the inclement weather adversely affected the attendance in the evening. The stallholders were:— Sewing, Mesdames W. Varcoe and H. Holland: sweets, Mesdames J. Johnson and E. Arnott; produce—Mesdames F. Plever, E. Wealherall, E. J. Weatherall, and J. Hollands; refreshments. Mesdames H. McNeil and J McLay. Personal Mr L. W. Gare. of the staff ot Imperial Pictures, has left Lawrence to take up residence in Queenstown, where he has been appointed operator at the picture theatre. QUEENSTOWN Lawn Tennis Club The annual meeting of the Queenstown Lawn Tennis Club was held on Thursday, Dr Anderson presiding. The election of officers resulted as follows; —President, Mr C. M. Inglis; vice-presidents—Dr Anderson, Messrs Gauntlett, Curtis P Dougherty, Mrs Stanton, and Miss White: secretary and treasurer, Mr G. D. Cochrane: auditor. Mr W, J. Hore; committee —Mesdames Stanton, Inglis. Miss E. Davies, and Messrs S. Bone and D. Williams, with power to add. The subscriptions were fixed at 15s for men. 7s 6d for women, and 5s for juniors. The opening day was set down for October 9. Cricket Club The annual meeting of'the Queenstown Cricket Club was held on Friday evening. The following officers were elected: President, Mr H. J. H. CROMWELL Concert and Dance A successful concert and dance was held on Tuesday evening last on tire occasion of the visit of the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) and her countesses. Earlier in the day the party visited the local high school, where an appropriate welcome was extended. During the concert a flag collection was taken up. The door takings, together with the collection, amounted to approximately £46. Cricket Clubs At the annual meeting of the Cromwell Cricket Club, the following officers were elected; —President, Mr S. Opening day was fixed for the first Saturday In October. • “ Field Day ” The " Field Day ” Committee of the local Patriotic Committee has decided to hold the “ Field Day ” on October 19 on the Cromwell Racecourse. There will be a large number of field and novelty events, and various committees have been set up to organise and control these. Proceedings will be commenced with a motor car procession. OMAKAU St. John Ambulance Association The following candidates from the Omakau St. John Ambulance class passed at the recent first aid examinations:— First aid: Misses C. M. Alexander, G. Lauder Presbyterian Church The annual meeting of the Lauder Presbyterian congregation was held’ in Becks Church last Wednesday evening, when delegates were present from Cambrian, Becks, Ophir and Omakau. The moderator of the General Assembly, the Right Rev. J. Lawson Robinson, who had been visiting the Central Otago Presbytery, was welcomed and introduced to the meeting, and at the conclusion of the business he gave an interesting address. The minister, the Rev. N. C. Hall, presided. and in the absence of a session report gave a review of the year’s work in the church. He referred to the attendance at public worship being small but regular. There were Sunday schools at Omakau, Ophir and Cambrian. The missionary activities of the parish were confined to the P.W.M.U. and the Busy Bees. The secretary (Mrs S. Leask) and the treasurer (Mr E. Mawhinney) presented the Management Committee’s report and balance sheet. A small credit balance was reported by Mr Mawhinney. but it was pointed out that the report showed only eight months’ normal expenditure—the vacancy, filled last November, having accounted for that. The debt on the manse had been reduced to just under £l6O. Mrs W. J. Lennon gave the P.W.M.U. report, and expressed the hope that interest in the union’s work would be so ex tended that a branch might be formed at the Becks end of the parish. The moderator’s address was much appreciated, and most of those present had the opportunity of meeting Mr Robinson during supper time. Before the supper was served by the ladles, two items were given—by Mr lan Hamilton (song) and Mr R. Dennis (violin solo). Miss Kath Mee was at the organ. Golf The weather was fine for the closing day of the Omakau Golf Club, which was held on Saturday. A Four-ball Match was played between teams representing the President and Club Captain, the President’s team winning by one game An approach and putting competition was won by Mrs Wallington and H. Ingram. On behalf of the Alexandra Club, Father O’Connell congratulated the Omakau Club on its success. The following trophies won during the season were then presented;—Ladies’ Championship, Miss C, Harvey; Scrymgeour Memorial, Miss T Alexander; Beattie Rose Bowl. Mrs Scorgie; L.G.U. Trophy and Mrs Scorgle’s trophy, Mrs Ingram: president’s trophy. Miss T. Alexander: Men’s Championship, J. Charles; Scrymgeour Memorial. J. Truesdale; president’s trophy. H. Ingram. During the week-end a club match was played on the local links with Ranfurly. Despite light rain, some good golf was witnessed. Hanfurly won by one game. Personal A social evening was held In the Omakau Hall last Wednesday to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs W. T. Parata, who are leaving the district. Mr Parata. who has taken an active interest in all matters

pertaining to the welfare of the district, especially sporting organisations, was the recipient of a life member’s badge from the Omakau Bowling Club, which he helped to form, while a presentation of a travelling rug to Mr and Mrs Parata was made from the residents of the district. The presentation on behalf ot the residents was made by Mr H. Oaten, Mr E. J. Read making the presentation from the Bowling Club. Messrs J. Clouston (Matakanul Football Club), F. Donnelly and M. Harty (Chatto Creek) also spoke, Mr Parata suitably acknowledging the good wishes Mrs Parata was also the guest at an evening held at Poolburn, when women friends presented her with a travelling set, while her Omakau friends made a presentation of a crystal vase. Before leaving on Saturday foi Kaitangata, Mr D. G. Davis, who has been on the Omakau Post Office staff for the past 18 months, was met by a number of residents and postal officials, and presented with a set of hair brushes and a sum of money. '
