ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

MOSGIEL'S FURTHER SUCCESS WINNERS OF CHINESE CUP In the closing Association football match of the season, played at Logan Park on Saturday, Mosgiel added the Chinese Cup _to its list of trophies by defeating Northern by five goals to nil. The ground and overhead conditions were ideal, and a large number of spectators witnessed a fast and exciting game. For the greater period of the game there was little between the teams, Mosgiel being the more dangerous by reason of its superior forward play. The Northern front line lacked cohesion, and Wallace, Meehan and Walsh, of the halves, by relying too much on defensive tactics, failed to back up sufficiently the front line when on attack. Sutherland, left full-back, and Gibson, in goal, played soundly. Hope, who towards the end received a bad concussion, which necessitated his removal to the Hospital, appeared to lose confidence after deflecting the ball through his own goal in the first spell. Steven, Skinrter and Rogers were outstanding in the Mosgiel front line, delighting spectators with their clever footwork and passing. C. Skinner, centrehalf, Johnstone, right full-back, and Mills, in goal, displayed good defence throughout. The first goal followed after 15 minutes' play, Rogers opening up to W. Steven, who beat Gibson from well out. Northern had a chance to draw level whfen Steven failed to clear an awkward ball, but Bertenshaw handled before netling. Before the interval a hard-driven shot by J. Skinner was deflected by Hope out of Gibson's reach to give Mosgiel a two-goal lead at half time. Shortly after the resumption C. Skinner cleared a Northern attack, Rogers passing to J. Skinner, whose centre was headed into goal by W. Steven. In the latter stages Mosgiel dominated the play by excellent team work and combination. J. Skinner netted with a high ball, and Rogers added the fifth when he beat Gibson with a splendid drive. Result:— Mosgiel 5 g°a ls : Northern Nil. Mr P. George was referee. AIR FORCE MATCH In a curtain raiser played between teams from the Wigram and Taieri Aerodromes the former won by five goals to two.
