Saturday, September 28 (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Drunkenness Walter Arthur Wilson, a statutoryfirst offender, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and was fined 10s in default 24 hours' imprisonment.—Two first offenders similarly charged, were each fined 12s 6d, with a like alternative. Breach of Gaming Act "This man is not one of the big bookmakers." said Detective Russell in the City Police Court on Saturday, when Isaac Henry Curtis, aged 54. appeared before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., and pleaded guilty to having used his shop in Manse street as a common gaming house—The defendant. Detective Russell added, had been doing silver betting, but he was very cautious, and bets of any size he placed with some of the big bookmakers, receiving a commission of Is 6d or 2s ki the £. That morning, when witness visited -his shop, he had taken four bets only, but there were no documents or betting material on the •premises which would indicate the extent of the business he was doing. He had been before the court on two previous occasions for gaming offences, the last time being in 1932.—A fine of £SO, with costs (10s) was imposed.
