RECREATIONAL TRAINING

WORK IN DUNEDIN DISTRICT MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of the Dunedin District Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee was held in the City Council Chambers last evening, Mr H. Harris presiding. - The area officer (Miss M. Martin) reported on the work being done by the Navy League Sea Cadets. She had, she said, been favourably impressed by the training the boys were receiving, but she stressed the necessity for better facilities, as at present 105 boys were being trained in a hall that was too small adequately to accommodate them.—lt was decided to give every assistance in securing improved facilities for training the group. The secretary (Mr E. C. Isaacs) reported on what had been accomplished in other centres in forming federations of sports bodies, and it was decided to circularise all sporting organisations in Dunedin asking them to aopoint delegates to attend a meeting to be held about the end of Septemoei for the purpose of considering the formation of a sports federation. As a result of inquiries received regarding the formation of women's and girls' baseball teams for the summer season, it was left to Miss Martin and Mr Harris to make inquiries whether areas in the city could be secured for demonstration purposes. There was some discussion on ihe formation of youths' recreational clubs in the suburbs, and it was reported that in instances where such clubs had been formed considerable success had been achieved. It was thought 'hal it might be possible to enlist the cooperation of the educational authorities in obtaining the use of school gymnasiums, and the officer was in structed to ascertain in what suburbs clubs might be formed.—The committee decided as a preliminary step to go into the possibility of form.ng clubs at Union street. North-East Valley and Mornington.
