Sir,—Your correspondent " Demos ' tries to drag a red herring across the trail. But .unfortunately for him. a great number of people in this country are beginning to realise that the present Government although it pretends to denounce vested interests, has added immeasurably to them. Every one of its creations of the Internal Marketing Board type is a vested interest. Another type of vested interest, as has been pointed out by another correspondent, has been created by its pampering of the class that will not work. The introduction of compulsory unionism has resulted in a great addition to another class of vested interest —the union secretaryship. All these vested interests are an incubus on the back of the real workers of the country As regards naming a person better fitted for the position than the union secretary mentioned I would say that any unbiased person with average education who knows what a fair day's work means would be a better man for the job. But there's the rub. The privileges of the waterside workers, which, after all. are just another vested interest, must be protected at all costs. I am. etc.. Arator. Dunedi.i. August 8,
