WAR EFFORT

GESTURE BY TEACHERS PROVISION OF AMBULANCE SERVICES OFFERED TO GOVERNMENT Ail amount of £550 has been raised to date a« the result of an appeal made to members of the Otago branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute for contributions to the war effort. The secretary (Mr A. Hanna) announced yesterday that it was proposed that the contributions should be used to provide an ambulance. Inquiries are being: made concerning the cost of placing one fully equipped in England. It is confidently anticipated that the amount required will>hc forthcoming. The amount received represents contributions from approximately . 400 members, including probationary assistants and junior teachers, and mav be regarded as a very gratifying effort as contributions were made in respect of salaries received. Mr Hanna said the splendid response made by the teachers was further evidence of their staunch loyalty and of their eager desire to assist in the war effort. The Otago branch of the institute, he pointed out, did not include all the teachers of the province, for there were also branches in North Otago and South Otago. Consideration was also being given, he added, to a proposal that an organisation should be established under which teachers would be prepared to give voluntary service in the war effort after school hours and during vacation. The executive of the N.Z.E.1.," Mr Hanna said. " has placed the whole of the machinery of the institute at the disposal of the department to be used in i any way that the Government may think best.. Throughout New Zealand there is a real desire on the part of the members of the teaching profession to contribute both in money and work" to the fullest extent towards the DoMTiinion's war effprt. "What is beinsr done by the teachers," he added, "is further but only partial evidence refuting the ill-judged utterances of hysterical individuals who have imputed to the profession suggestions of disloyalty,"
