RICCARTON NOTES
RECORD FROST (Special ro DailV Times; ,CHRISTCHURCH, July 7:0. One of the hardest frosts we have had tliis winter was experienced at Riccarton this morning. One effect was to hold up the training work. . Fortunately, it was an off morning, so that the trainers were not seriously inconvenienced. Some of them sent their horses round the roads, while others made a late start with pace work on the sand, which was not so much affected as the grass-tracks. A few trainers decided to delay their work til] the afternoon. T. H. Gillett had made arrangements to school Dividend over hurdles, but with the ground so hard, he changed his plans. Probably he will jump later in the week. He has done well lately, and he should be a fit horse next month. Countervane, who has been schooling for some time over hurdles, seems to have taken a dislike to the obstacles, and she refused repeatedly in her latest trial, dislodging her rider twice. Lifeguard continues to shape well in his jumping. He is a very speedy customer over four hurdles. Cintilla had a school this week over two hurdles, getting over safely, though not very attractively. The hunter. Enniskillen. who was lame after a gallop last week, is making slow progress. He is at Mrs J. Campbell's stables yet, but he is doing no work. It is probable that he will be .sent home soon, but it is unlikely that any further effort will be made to train him. The Southland gelding,- Waitoru, who put in an appearance here this week, seems to move very short. The trouble is thought to be due to muscle soreness, and it may affect nis immediate programme. Cottingham has made good progress in the last few days and he has thrown off all signs of his unsoundness. H. Nurse has started to give him some exercise on the lead and is hopeful that the big gelding will be fit for racing over country at the Grand Nptional meeting. Cape Gabo. who was given a spell after he raced at Ashburton in May. is again in work, having been placed under the care of J. Young at Addington. His owner, Mr J. McCleary, had him at Riccarton yesterdav. when he was given some useful work. Accompanying him was the three-year-old. Ham Way. an Iliad gelding from Entreaty, the dam of Phar Lap. This young horse, a chestnut, had one race in the spring/ Cape Gabo is due to race at the Waimate hunt meeting next Riccarton stable have contributed a strong team to the nominations for the Waimate Hunt meeting.
