Surcoat, the favourite for the Mariri Steeplechase, was towards the rear early, but he had moved up handy by the time they had run once round, and was in third place behind the joint leaders, Dozie Boy and King Mestor, as they took the top brush the last time. Here Surcoat hit hard and tossed his rider, who hung round the horse's neck in an unavailing attempt to get back "into the saddle. Lovelilt then went after the two leaders, and, while She able to, run King Mestor. she had "no chance with Dozie Boy. who scored well. King Mestor weakened badlv at the finish, and One Whetu, who made a late run,, just to get him for third. ■.'..!■■-' , The hack sprint was won well b- th-v third each-way favourite, Tuatara. He drew No. 2. and was always handy, He went out into the middle of the track in the straight and outstayed his opponThe most prominent to the course proper were Kriemhild, Laughing Song, Lucullus Boy, Gold Blaz?. Parchment, Flying Flag. St. Grace and Tuatara- Some of the leaders. stopped oulckly in the run home;' and Flying Flag drew out. to be challenged by Tuatara. the latter gradually getting the upper hand Expellant, who had not been sighted early came along with a late run, to cut out Lucullus Lad for third. Then came Laughing Song, Kriemhild, Norse, AutoRweep and Parchment. Turaki. the favourite in the bis hacK hurdle field, gave a very poor display He drifted to the rear early, and never made'a forward move at any stage, appearing unable to hit out at all. The race. ■ despite its numerous starters, earlv resolved itself into • a procession, and finallv a:duel between Midland and Pekoe. Midland led from end to end. with Pekoe in behind him, and after crossing the last fence together they settled t down into a ■ grim . struggle, in which Midland finally weakened. The third horse, Esperance Bay. was 12 to 15 lengths away. Just ahead of Tidewaiter.

An outsider in Screen Star nearly brought off a surprise win in the open sprint. He drew close in and, making most of his light-weight, had all the field bar Blonde Princess beaten in the straight, but the latter stuck on very solidly and, vigorously ridden by Wiggins, wore down the leader. Brazilian came with a late run out on the track to take third, well clear of White Rajah, who ran over a tiring lot. All the other early leadersGrey Honour, Skyren?. Vascones, and Majority—stopped in the run home. Padishah, a solid favourite for the Wellington Steeplechase, finished only a poor third and was a very distressed horse at the finish, requiring veterinary a'tention. The race was won comfortably by the sixth each-way favourite Chat. Flashlight mads the running for nearly a round, but was then displaced by Clarion Call and Chat, this pair drawing clear away, jumping fence for fence. Clarion Call Was outjumping Chat at most of the fences, and the latter had a life at the stand double the last time, but at the board fence about five furlongs from home Clarion Call got into the lump and crashed This left Chat well clear and although Bally Bri* made a strong run home, he never had any chance of catching him. Bally B-'tWPS with t'-»» lea.d'rs earl", but had drifted in the middle stages, and was fully half a furlong from the two leaders when Clarion Cali fell. Better placed, he might have wen Padishah, who had been in the rear in th° early running, had moved up handy as they entered on the last 10 furlongs, but h«s mad" a iumo at the brush just behind the mile post, and-'although-he sfay-d r>" '"'"• third niacin!?, he. was never a noss'hility. El Meynell. second each-way favourite for the Trentham Hurdles, had a decisive win. He took on the favourite, Hessketoon, out in front, down the back, and went clear into the lead round the home turn, going on for a comfortable victory He has now won three hurdle races in as many starts. Soho. always well r-laced and never further b»ck than fourth, ran on for second a little better than. Blue Tiger, who made his run from the- rear. Hessketoon, who weakened over the last half-mile, was fourth, and then came Aussie Ra and Curie together. Roval Star II scored an all-the-way win in the Whyte Handicap, for which he was only sixth and fifth choice Beginning smartly, he always had the bace of his opponents, and although the favourite. Hunting Royal, loomed up as a possibility from the false rail and got on terms he had ..no chance with the ■.winner when kicked up. Hunting Royal was always handv to the leader, and had every chance. He was bracketed with Philemup. who was with Hunting Royal and Disdain in behind the winner throughout and finished fifth. Disdain got- the run.: of the race just, in behind the winner on the rail, but she was weakening at the end. and Ned Cuttle, who was in behind her coming into the straight, just cut her out,of third on the post. The bad luck of favourites was. not broken bv Anita Foe in the concluding event. She was prominent only to the turn into.the straight, and then faded out. Authoress set a sound pace all the way, to the straight and had nearest her in the running a bunch which included Don Quex, Little Robin. Pink Lad. Sheeny, Royal Show. Stella Lux. and Te Ore. Authoress stopped quicklv once the pressure was applied, and, although Pink Lad and Sheenv for a moment looked dangerous. Little Robin ran to the front and won well from Stella Lux. who finished better than Pink Lad for second Pink Lad held on for third from Sheeny, with Don Quex and Royal Show handy then coming Te Ore and Gitana Lass HANDICAPS FOR TO-MORROW iPeb United Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 9. Only Three Since 1895 the only mares to win the Wellington Steeplechase are Nadador (1908). Nedra (1913), and Chat. .(1940). Nlghtwlngs Nightwings was taken up to Wellington with Monipere and will probably start in the Parliamentary Handicap. A Change Mi" D ~T. Guiney, who acted as broadcaster at Trentham, is now acting as assistant judge at the meetings. Blonde Princess The Stewards' Handicap winner, Blonde Princess, is a five-year-old mare by Hunting Song from Fair Queen, a mare not in the Stud Book.

Stakes and Trophy The winner of the Wellington Steeplechase receives £7OO in stakes and a gold cup valued at £75. presented by Mr C. M. Turrell. Tuatara The Woburn Handicap winner, Tuatara, has now.won four times in eight starts this season. He is an aged gelding by Lord Quex. Flying Flag Flying Flag, who ran second in the Woburn Handicap, is a three-year-old half-sister to the Valkyrian gelding Slayer and a sister to Flagman. Heavy Going - The time recorded at Trentham in the Woburn Handicap, lmin 22Jsec, suggests that the going was about on a par with last year, when the winner put up lmin 21isec. Dozie Boy The Mariri Steeplechase winner, Dozie Boy, is a well-bred gelding got by Lucullus from Prosy, by Demosthenes—Snooze, by Flintlock—Lullaby, by Apremont— Hammock. Chief Lama Chief Lama, who ran at the Oamaru meeting, carried the same colours as Night Scout, Chief Lama was formerly raced under lease, but is now in G. Feildlng's stable. Pekoe Pekoe, the winner of the Vittoria Hurdles, •is a five-year-old gelding by Kiosk from uourtstep, by Grandcourt— Orozino. by Finland from D'Oro. a sister to Desert Gold, Egypt, and Nigger Minstrel. Pekoe finished second to El Meynell at the Otaki meeting held last month. Delays Long delays at the post caused by more or less notoriously fractious horses are bad enough in the summer months, but doubly so in the winter. It is distinctly unfair to keep the majority of a field standing flat-foot while one or two noted for fractiousness at the post hold up the start. Hca.vy Going Once again has the Wellington winter meeting opened in i eavy going, which is generally on hand at Trentham at this time of the year. Such track conditions are against top-weights, and in favour of light-weights able to act In heavy going. Limond In comment on the career ot the late Mr. Edward Moorhouse it is said that he bought Limond at lOOgns. After Limosin established Limond's posibilities as a sire he was sold at 4000gns to Mr G. M. Currie. Limond sired winners of £273,500 up to last year. Slow and Fast Times The time put up by Chat in the Wellington Steeplechase is the slowest put up since King's Guard won in 7min 34Jsec in 1929. The best time put up in recent years was when Billy Boy 11.3 won in 7min sJsec in 1932, and again in 1934, when he won with 11.5 in 7min lOsec. The race record is held by Master Strowan, who won in 1922 with 10.10 in 7min 3sec. Master Strowan had previously won in 1918 with 12.8 in 7min 13 4-ssec. A Cheap Horse Royal Star 11, the winner of the Whvte Handicap, was sold at the dispersal of the late Mr W. Higgins's stud at 25gns He has won one race since the sale, and been seven times placed. Last season Royal Star II scored three wins and a dead-heat His principal win was in the Wairarapa Cup of £6OO with 7.10 in 2i,iin 6 2-ssec. Royal Star II is a gelding who won in England prior 'to importation, and generally deemed unsound when sold at Trentham. El Meynell It is rather interesting to note that El Meynell and Pekoe, the winners of the two hurdles on the first card at Wellington, met at Otafci on June 22. El Meynell 10.6 beat Pekoe 10.2 by a head, with Smoke Screen 11.4 two lengths away,. El Meynell is a five-year-old gelding'' bv Hunting. Song from Haligan, by Hallowmas—Bonny Helen, by Boniform—Helen Portland. He belongs to the same .female line as Reremoana, who won the Thompson Handicap in 1925 with .7.7 in lmin 38sec, and again in 1927 with 9.8 in lmin 371 sec. ..-,': V.' •.- .•'■■■"' Wellington Steeplechase Fields Since 1895 the largest, field that contested the Wellington Steeplechase is 17. This number went to the post when Captain Jack won in 1914 and again when Omahu won in 1924, Master Strowan won in 1922, when 16: went to the post, and 15 were saddled four times. The smallest was in 1907, when Haydn beat three others; five started in 1906 and 1911. The race record is held by'Vascular,'who won in 1919 in 6min's4sec. Since'then the race has never been run under seven minutes. The weight-carrying record is held by Coalition, who won under 12.11 in 1921, and Master Strowan. with 12.8, forming the only occasions when over 12.0 has been successfully carried. The next highest is 11.9 carried by Omahu when he won tire second time. Bargains Since All Irish won the Great Northern Steeplechase many instances have been quoted of horses bought at bargain prices who became good winners. Relatively to the amount gained, the purchase price of £lO given for All Irish makes him one of the best bargains on record. Levanter, Hautere, Coalition, El Gallo, Gluepot, Sea De'il and Beau Cavalier were great jumpers who included the Great Northern Steeples in their records, and the most expensive by far was El Gallo, twice winner of the Great Northern double, who cost £2OO and a contingency. Levanter, Coalition and Beau Cavalier also won the Grand National. Beau Cavalier was secured for £55, Coalition and Levanter for £SO. Gluepot for 18 guineas. Hautere for £l2 10s, and Sea De'il for £lO. El Gallo was a good performer on the flat also, and he won over £4600 for Mr W. J Ralph. In two seasons. Beau Cavalier won nearly £7OOO, and Coalition's winnings were £8535/ However, apart from the highly speculative buying of young and untried horses, there have been many examples, of Australian and New Zealand gallopers being passed on' at bargain prices. After winning his first three races as a three-year-old. Amounis was bought by Mr A. P. Wade for 3000 guineas, his price as a yearling having been one-tenth that sum; In the following April, after he had won about £IO,OOO, Mr Wade put Amounis up for auction, and at 1800 guineas he:became the property of Mr W Pearson, and, setting the seal to his fame by a victory in the Caulfield Cup as an -eight-year-old, he amassed over £48.000 in all; Thus, he made a fortune for two owners. The great stayer David was sold as a yearling for 40 guineas, and. after winning many valuable races he was bought as a four-year-old from Mr R. Baillie by Mr N. Falkiner for 3000 guineas After a few more successes Mr Falkiner sold him to his brother, Mr O. R. Falkiner. for the same price, and before he retired to the stud he had amassed in excess of £31.000, over £25,000 being secured for his last owner. As a six-year-old.
