WAITATI-DOCTORS' POINT ROAD

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—l was surprised during the week-end to find that a grader had been working on the Waitati-Doctors' Point road during the week, making this road impassable for traffic. For the past 30 years the ratepayers in the Waikouaiti County have had to put up with the worst roads in New Zealand. In fact, you would think that the engineer who made the first road through there had handed down a heritage to the present engineer. Doctors' Point Beach is 14 miles from Dunedin—ll miles by tar-sealed highway, the balance by a good hard road used by week-enders and holidaymakers, more so since the petrol restrictions came into power, as it is a short run from the city. People who

come by rail use this road, and children travel it to school. Notwithstanding this, a grader has torn up the road and left it like a river bed. Let members of the council visit Dunedin and see how, with the use of one steam road-roller, a road can be made. If the council has a roller, let it be put over this road as quickly as possible. The road could then be bound with sand. At present the only good portion is the part the grader did not touch. It would be helpful, too. to cut back half the manuka scrub and not have visitors complaining about bad visibility.—l am. etc., July 7. Ratepayer.
