GERMAN RAIDERS SHOT DOWN ROYAL AIR FORCE HITTING BACK (By Radio) DAVENTRY, July 8. An Air Ministry communique says that seven German planes were brought down in yesterday’s raids on Britain. In one air battle four Messerschmitts were shot down by a British Hurricane fighter. The Germans have now lost over 40 planes since the daily air raids on Britain began, or an average of two a day. The Royal Air Force is also hitting back, and daylight reconnaissance flights were yesterday carried out over a wide area of enemy territory. In Germany aerodromes and other military objectives were successfully attacked and at Bergen fuel stores were set on fire. Attacks were also launched against enemy bases in Holland, Belgium, and France. WAR IN THE AIR GIBRALTAR BOMBED LALINEA, July 8. (Received July 9, at 1 a.m.) Planes, believed to have been French, heavily bombed Gibraltar on Sunday, apparently hitting a destroyer. Destroyers are constantly patrolling around the Rock. The Ark Royal has arrived. BOMBERS OVER MALTA THREE RAIDERS SHOT DOWN MALTA, July 8. (Received July 9, at 1 a.m.) Three air raiders were shot down in 12 hours at the week-end. Two of four raiders crashed into the sea on Saturday night. Four alarms were sounded on Sunday. Two soldiers were killed and six wounded, and nine civilians were, killed and one wounded. Those killed included children and a woman. No military damage was done, but several houses were destroyed. BRITAIN AND FRANCE QUESTION OF RELATIONS LONDON, July 8. (Received July 9, at 2 a.m.) It is understood that the French Embassy has still not ; received any information from the Petain Government with regard to the rupture of .diplomatic relations between England and France. AIR RAIDS ON ALEXANDRIA NO CASUALTIES OR DAMAGE ' / ALEXANDRIA, July 8. (Received July 9, at 2 a.m.) Enemy planes three times raided the harbour yesterday. One machine was shot down. There were no casualties or damage.
