COMMAND IGNORED
FRENCH GENERAL IN AFRICA NOT RETURNING HOME WILL FIGHT WITH BRITAIN (United Press Association) (By Electnc Telegraph—Copyright) 'LONDON, June 27. (Received June 27, at 11 p.m.) The Daily Telegraph reports that General Nogues, commander of the French forces in North Africa, ignored the Petain Government’s command to return to France immediately. The French community in the Straits Settlements informed the Governor that they unreservedly placed their services at the dispose 1 of Britain. M. Corbin, the French Ambassador in London, tendered his resignation to the Petain Government, which accepted it. M. Corbin informed Lord Halifax of his decision on Tuesday. . A message from Bordeaux states that M. Baudouin announced that M. Corbin had resigned. He sc id the Government did not envisage his immediate replacement. He added that Mr Churchill’s recent attitude had provoked pained astonishment in France. The Gibraltar correspondent of the Associated Press of Britain scys it has been reported without confirmation from Casablanca that General Nogues ordered the arrest of M. reports state that the commanders of French worships have given an assurance to General Nogues that they will continue to fight on the side of Britain. General de Gaulle is forming a French volunteer legion in Britain, which the British Government is fully supporting. General de Gaulle is also establishing a French centre for armaments and scientific workers, under which French brains will be placed at the disposal of the Allied cause. A French Embassy official stated that M, Reyfiaud was still at Bordeaux a few days ago. There was no reason to believe that he h'd left France. A message from Madrid states that the official Spanish agency reports that the Petain Government is transferring its headquarters to ClermontFerrand before the week-end.
Clermont-Ferrand is near the Allier River, and is 112 miles "west of Lyons. It is an important junction, and'has iron and steel industries.
