SCHOOL COMMITTEES

OTAGO ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Schools Committees’ Association of Otago was held in the Education Board’s board room last night, Mr M. A. Robson presiding over a good attendance of delegates. Annual Report Moving the Adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the chairman referred to the possible repercussion from war conditions on education in general. At the present time, no doubt, he said, the strictest economy was essential in most activities, but the cutting down of expense in cpnnection with education was a thing that every school committee should fight against. The future welfare of every school child, not only in Otago, but in the Dominion, depended on the schools being kept up to their present standard, and any suggestion that this standard should be lowered, even in the least degree, could not be countenanced. It was gratifying to note, Mr Robson proceeded, that in some districts at least, considerably more interest was taken by householders in the committee elections held in April last, but he would like to see an increase in the membership of the association, which worked for the benefit of all the committees in Otago, and was always alive to, and prepared to deal with, their problems. The motion was seconded by Mr J. D. Clyde and carried. New Constitution A revised constitution which had been prepared by the executive, was submitted to the meeting, and after several, minor amendments had been agreed to, was approved. Dental Treatment It was decided to approve and forward on to the Dominion Council the following remit from the Port Chalmers Committee: “ That the Minister of Health be approached with a view to having the Dental Clinic scheme placed under the Social Security Act.” Office-bearers The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mr M. A. Robson; vice-president, Mr G. T. Anderson; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr J. A. Evans; executive—Messrs F. Tombs, A. C. Durable, H. H. Johnson, G. A. Rutherford, J. J. Prosser, W. P. Birchall, J. D Clyde, N D. Anderson, and W. G. Leithley; representatives on kindred bodies—Messrs L. Sanderson and A. T. Mclndoe (Primary Schools’ Sports Association), Mr W. D. Ripley (Vocational Guidance Committee).
