VIOLENT COLLISION
ARMY TRUCK AND SHEEP LORRY ELEVEN TERRITORIALS INJURED EIGHT TAKEN TO HOSPITAL (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 17. Hurled out of an army truck on to the roadway at Manurewa shortly before 7 o’clock to-night 11 out,of a party of 21 territorials from the Pukekohe district were injured and taken to the Auckland Hospital. Later three were able to go home, the others being admitted suffering for the most part from concussion. None is regarded as being in a serious condition. The remaining 10 were sent to the Papakura Mobilisation Camp and later. taken home after , being given a hot drink and food. Those admitted to hospital were: BERNARD BALLE, aged 19, single, suffering from concussion. WILLIAM JOHN BLAKEMOORE, aged 19, single, concussion and abrasions. DESMOND GALLAGHER, aged 18, single, concussion. JOSEPH HENRY McGUIRE, aged 18. single, concussion. BERNARD MEYER, aged 32, married. concussion. RONALD PYE. aged 19, single, concussion. JAMES NEIL ROBERTSON, aged 18, single, concussion. CHARLES RODGERS, aged. 18, single, slight concussion and bruises. All the men are serving territorials or recruits for the Ist Battalion, Auckland Regiment They were being brought into the city ror medical examination. At The intersection at Manurewa a collision occurred between the army transport and. an' empty double-decker sheep transport lorry. The bodywork of the army transport and the sheep truck projecting out from behind the respective drivers’ cabins came into violent collision. The canopy of the army transport was torn from the chassis, and at least 11 of the men were hurled on to the road, being scattered over a distance of about 50 feet. When the two vehicles came to rest the roadway was littered with wreckage. f
