RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED SINGLE AND MARRIED MEN NEEDS OF NATIONAL SERVICE (From Our ’Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 17. Restrictions against . travelling abroad by single men of military age and married men of all ages are to be imposed under the Government’s policy for the issue of , permits to persons wishing to leave New Zealand. This was announced to-night by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E. Parry, who said that in the case of women desirous of leaving the Dominion consideration would be given lo their occupation and the reasons advanced for their proposed journey. The following are the governing clauses of an order to be brought into operation immediately:— In the case of single men up to 45 years of age a permit to leave New Zealand permanently will be refused unless the applicants are definitely unfit for military or civil service. A permit to leave temporarily will be refused except on very good grounds, and then only on a substantial bond being given for return to New Zealand. So far as single men* over 45 years of age and married men of all ages are concerned, permits to leave permanently will be granted only in exceptional circumstances and where the applicants are unfit for active or home service. A permit to leave temporarily will be granted only on a substantial bond being given for return to New Zealand. In the case of persons who been resident in New Zealand for not more than two years and have not come here with the intention of residing permanently, the issue of a permit will be considered after an examination of each case on its merits. Mr Parry said that the policy laid down by the Government, in regard to men was with the object of conserving the man-power of the Dominion for national service. The arrival of women in England might easily provide a problem, and in their own interests the women of New Zealand should 1 remain in their own country. “ The Minister of Man-power and the Minister of Internal Affairs,” Mr Parry said, “will maintain close contact in dealing with travel applications to ensure that essential men are not allowed to leave the country, even for temporary absences, if their services are likely to be required in New Zealand.”
