RUGBY FOOTBALL

NO SUB-UNION MATCHES , OTAGO UNION’S ATTITUDE The Otago Rugby Union decided last evening to suggest to the Southland Rugby Union that the annual interprovincial sub-unions’ match should not be played this season. The subject was raised by a letter from the South Otago Sub-Union asking whether it was intended to play the subunion trials and matches this season. "If so, we will have to get busy.”;the letter said. The president (Mr D. C. Jolly) said that nothing had yet been arranged for country football. The general impression among the sub-unions was that the Country Week matches would not be played this season and that there would be no Otago-Southland sub-unions’ match. Mr D. M. Spedding said he understood that the Southland union was not anxious to play this match, and the meeting decided to suggest to the Southland union that it should be cancelled for this season. Difficulties of Junior Teams The increasing difficulties being experienced by some clubs in filling their junior teams was discussed by Mr W. Pearson. As enlistments made holes in senior and second grade teams, players were promoted, and some of the Fourth Grade teams were finding great trouble in keeping their engagements. He quoted the Green Island Fourth Grade team as a particular example, and mentioned that for its match against Pirates last Saturday it had to be built up by the inclusion of schoolboys and several Pirates players. The Pirates Club had agreed to a request to this effect, and the same thing might have to be arranged again. Mr C. G. Gibbons said that theTaieri First Grade team was expecting to have four members go into camp at any time. The side had no reserves, and the Second Grade team had no reserves. Th ■ club was facing serious difficulties, but it would try to find some young players to build up the Green Island team for its match against Taieri this week. After a general discussion, it was agreed that everything possible would be done to keep all young players in the game. If their teams were forced to withdraw, the transfer regulations would be relaxed to enable them to go to other clubs. No difficulties would be placed in „.ieir way, provided proper application were made to the union.
