LOCAL BODY DRIVERS
INCREASED WAGES SOUGHT “ UNJUSTIFIABLE DEMANDS ” (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 14. Demands for increased wages and new conditions covering local body drivers came before the Makara County Council to-day. The chairman, Mr Windley, said it seemed evident that some increase in wages would be granted. There had already been an increase for general labourers, but he could not understand it because he felt in the existing conditions it was unwarranted. The Government had power to suspend the powers of the Arbitration Court, and hp thought this was desirable under war conditions. From a local body point of view every increase had to be passed on to the ratepayers. The opinion was expressed that while other sections of the community were bearing their share of the war effort, certain unions were making unjustifiable demands on industry and support was given the Wallace County Council’s resolution asking for a reinstatement of the 48-hour week without increase in weekly wages, and with a 50 per cent, reduction in holidays, and overtime at ordinary rates of pay.
