TUAPEKA COUNTY
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Tuapeka * County Council was held yesterday at Lawrence. The chairman (Mr R. ‘S. Thompson) presided. Finance The treasurer (Mr R. F. Batchelor) reported that the receipts for the month totalled £llO3 2s 6d, and the expenditure was £2172 4s Bd. The bank credit balance was £2758 16s Bd. Estimates The following 1 main highways . estimates were submitted by the clerk:—Rae’s Junc-tion-McNab, £1433; Balclutha-Lawrence. £1181; Willowbank-Mathesons, £882; Tapanui-railway station, £175; RoxburghMiller’s Flat. £1630 (including priming and first seal coat); Waipahi-Pomahaka, £335; Miller’s Flat-railway station, £53; Kelso-Tapanui, £354 (all £3 for £1 subsidy): Milton-Queenstown (footpath and sealing), £l5O (£1 for £l).—Approved. The Public Works Department wrote advising that the county’s allotment for grants for road construction was £I6OO, and asked 1 for details to be supplied.—The clerk said that the county’s commitments were £IOOO, and this amount would be deducted from the allowance; leaving only £6OO—A list of necessary works was drawn up for submission to the department. Rates Levied The following rates for the ensuing year were struck (inclusive of hospital rate:— Waltahuna, Gabriel’s and Brown’s Ridings. lid in the £1; Beaumont. Tapanui. Crookston; Teviot, Benger and Waiport j Ridings, Id in the £l. Correspondence The secretary, Otago Hospital Board, wrote advising that the quarterly levy due on June 1 was £1037 18s lid. —Received. The clerk, Wallace County Council, wrote asking its support of the following resolution; —“That owing to world condition* this council ask for a reinstatement of the 48-hour week without any wage increase, also a 50 per cent, reduction in holidays and overtime at ordinary rates of pay."—Received. Mr R. Davidson and 10 other settlers of Tuapeka Flat wrote asking that immediate attention be given to the Flat road. —Referred to the member for the riding and the engineer. The Chief Postmaster. Dunedin, wrote advising that the mail contractor had laid complaints regarding the condition of Hunter’s road—lt was decided to notify the department that an application had been made to the Public Works Department for a grant and support of the application was desired. The secretary. Beaumont School Committee. wrote asking that the water table in front of the school be cleaned out.— It was decided to attend to the matter. The district engineer, Public Works De- . partment, wrote advising that an access road to Mr M. J, Fahey, Chinaman Flat, would cost £llOO, of which £650 would be for metalling. If the council would pay half the cost of the metalling, he would recommend a £1 for £1 subsidy on the remainder if the council would pay the cost of the incidental legislation.—Held over. i The secretary Waitane Sawmilling Company, wrote drawing attention to the state of the Paradise Flat road.—Left to Crs Murney and Revie, with power to act. A grant of £99 was made for expenditure on this road. The clerk. Tapanui Borough Council, wrote drawing attention to the Tapanui Cemetery road and to the erosion caused by the Whisky Gully Creek.—Left to the member for the riding. General f Mrs R. F. Batchelor was appointed to represent the council at the patriotic conference in Wellington which has been called by Lady Galway. Mr E. S. Allen, of Roxburgh, was appointed county inspector. , Applications for slaughterhouse licences were approved as follows: —Barr and Tonkin. Wetherstones; Robertson and Weatherall, Wetherstones; Lischner and McNeil, Tapanui; T. Edgfir, Tapanui.
