DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS
ANNUAL FESTIVAL The Dunedin Competitions annual festival will be held from August 21 to 31, the syllabus and book of words for which can be obtained at Begg’s, or at the secretary’s office. Despite the fact that the society has lost money during the past two years, the committee feels that it is due to the competitors who have so generously supported the society to make an effort to keep the competitions going during the anxious time through which the Empire is passing and give the young people something to work for and keep their thoughts off the war. It has been necessary to reduce the prize money, but it is felt that this will not affect the competitors and that they will come forward as usual to receive the judges’ criticisms on their work, and at the same time assist the society ,to continue its work. It is hoped that the public will also accord the festival generous patronage and many citizens could assist the society by becoming subscribers. It is felt the work the society has carried on during the past 39 years is recognised and that the public will give the society financial support so that it will be possible for it to continue. While it is recognised that the public has many calls at the present time, it is hoped that people of Dunedin, in the interest of the young people, will see their way to assist the society this year. The following judges have been appointed for the festival:—Elocution. Mr J. W. Bailey (Auckland), instrumental music. Dr T. Vernon Griffiths; vocal music, Mr V. C. Peters; dancing. Miss Betty Carnochan. Entries will be closed on June 28,
