OBITUARY
MR F. T. POOLE The death occurred in Dunedin last week of an old Kaitangata identity in the person of Mr Frederick Thomas Poole, at the age of 83 years. Mr Poole came out to New Zealand in the ship Tiniaru in the. year 1877. He; was a nurseryman by occupation and secured a position with the late Mr Gray at the nurseries near Summer Hill. Later, he resided at Milton, where he was in the employ of Mr Gray, but he returned to Kaitangata to commence business on hsown account as a draper, and also as a flaxmiller. He took a keen interest in local politics, and after serving as a councillor, held the position of Mayor of Kaitangata for two or three terms. He was, however, best known to residents of Otago. as a horticulturist, and his garden at Kaka Point, near Wilsher Bay, was a source of pleasure to local residents and to countless visitors. Mr Poole was highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place at Kaitangata o'n Friday, the Rev. Mr Ashford and members of the Loyal Pride of Kaitangata Lodge conducting the service. Mr Poole is survived by two sons and five daughters—Mr J. Poole (Waitaki), Mr F. J. Poole (Norfolk Island), Mrs Smith (St. Kilda). Mrs W. Chisnall (Nelson), Mrs Blackburn (Kaitangata), Mrs J. Piatt (Christchurch), and Mrs H,. H. Kyle (Clinton). MR H. R. H. BALNEAVIS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON," May 18. Mr H. R. H. Balneavis, private. secre T tary to the Minister of Native Affairs, died suddenly in Parliament House Mr Balneavis was educated at Te Aute College, and early in 1900 entered into partnership with Mr C. Ferris, of Gisborne. as Native agents. Five years later he joined the Public Service and when Mr (now Sir) Apirana Ngata, became a Cabinet Minister in 1909 he was appointed his private secretary. Later, he transferred to the Native Minister's staff, holding that office till the time of his death. He received the M.V.O. in 1927 for long and distinguished service. For many years Mr Balneavis was one of Wellington's foremost golfers. ' He was champion of the Hutt Club in 1909, 1911, and 1912, and champion of Miramar in 1916. 1917, an§ 1919. A lefthander, he drovo a long ball off the tees, and was a master of iron play. He also did valuable service on the administrative side of the game, having been a member of the council of the New Zealand Golf Association from 1922 till 1929. He is survived by his wife. .
