USE OF MOTOR HORNS
RESTRICTIONS TO BE IMPOSED AID TO SAFER DRIVING (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 13. "Regulations prohibiting the use of motor horns in built-up areas except in cases of emergency between 11 and 7 a.m. will be brought before Cabinet shortly," said Mr R. Sernple yesterday. "The measure, he said, "fellows representations by the North and South Island Motor Unions and a recommendation from the Road Safety Council," Mr Sernple said. Its purpose was to minimise accident risks by encouraging motorists to drive by sight rather than by sound. The permissible use of the horn in emergency would apply whenever another road user had committed an offence likely to endanger the driver. Even during daylight, the excessive use of the norn was to be discouraged. If .used unnecessarily, horns were invariably confusing, and frequently dangerous.
