JUNIOR SELECTION COMMITTEE COACHES REMAIN INELIGIBLE MEETING OF OTAGO UNION The motion on the books of the Otago Rugby Union debarring coaches of Second Grade teams from eligibility for election to the Junior Representative Selection Committee was the subject of discussion at the meeting of the union last evening. The matter had been brought up at the previous meeting, when Mr J. B. Wootton gave notice that he would move that the motion be rescinded. In Mr Wootton's absence last evening, the motion was moved by Mr W. J. Pearson. It was explained that when the restriction was imposed four years ago there were 16 teams in the Second Grade, and it was considered impossible for a coach to attend to his own team and to see all of the prospective representative players in action. There were now two sections in the Second Grade, and the opponents of the notice of motion argued that it was now still more impracticable for a man to attend to the duties of coach and selector. Mr C. G. Gibbons, himself a First Grade selector, and a club coach, considered that .the union should be consistent. If Second Grade coaches were not eligible for election to the Junior Selection Committee, then First Grade coaches should not be. eligible for the First Grade Selection Committee. He was, prepared to resign as a selector if the union would adopt a consistent attitude. The senior selectors were appointed by the annual meeting, the chairman (Mr D. C. Jolly) said, and that question was not before the meeting. The notice of motion was heavily defeated, so that th2 restriction on Second Grade coaches remains in force. Mr A. Grant had already been appointed the union's representative on the committee, and Messrs J. Hook, the Pirates Club nominee, and J. Sim, the Kaikorai nominee, were elected from eight nominations for the other two positions. Second Air Force Team An entry of a second team from the Air Force Training Centre at Taieri in the Secorid Grade competition was accepted. It was explained in the application that this team, which would All the bye in this grade, would vary in personnel from week to week and month to month as batches of pupil, pilots passed through the centre. The club was able to offer the union the use of its ground. Tonga Park Ground In reply to the union's advice that it doubted whether it could accept a lease of a ground at Tonga Park unless dressing accommodation were provided, the Reserves Committee of the Dunedin City Council -stated that it was not possible in the present financial year to make provision for further dressing accommodation. It was suggested that an exchange of this ground could be made with a ground on the Oval now used for hockey. Members agreed that it was necessary to retain a ground at Tonga Park for school football, and it was decided to keep the ground and to attempt to make other temporary arrangements for dressing accommodation.
