OMAKAU Rugby Football The first round of matches in the Vincent Rugby Football Sub-union's competition was opened on Saturday, in fine weather. At Omakau, Matakanui A met Alexandra, the home team winning by 6 to nil. The score was made up of a try by Gillies,and a penalty goal by N. White. In the B Grade, Matakanui was defeated by Alexandra on the latter's ground by 6 to nil. Next Saturday Matakanui A will play Cromwell, at Cromwell, Golf On Saturday the men played the final round of the Caldwell Cup, the following being the best scores:—J. Truesdale 71, H. Ingram 73, J. Charles 76, G. Naylor 77. The aggregate for the cup resulted in J. Charles and H. Ingram tying with 148, with J. Truesdale (149) and G. Naylor (153) next in order. The final between Messrs Charles and Ingram will be played off at the first opportunity. In the second round of the Beattie Rose Bowl, competed for by the women players, Mrs Scorgie proved the winner with a total of 151, others being Mrs Ingram 153, Miss J. Harvey 161, Mrs Truesdale 174. Owing to the tournament at Alexandra next Saturday a draw for those not taking part will be made at the clubhouse at 1 p.m. During the week-end a match was played with the Ranfurly Club, the following being the scores (Omakau names first):— J. Charles lost to A. McLachlan 5 and 3, C. Deaker lost to A. Macdonald 6 and 4, W. Strang and R. Long all square, P. Kidd lost to Dr Eudey 2 up, H. Ingram lost to W. Gilbert 2 and 1, J. Truesdale lost to Jamieson 5 and 3, A. McLean beat L. Knight 3 and 2, J. Anderson beat Rawlinson 2 up. For the ladies Miss J. Harvey beat Mrs Macdonald 4 and 2, Miss C. Harvey beat Mrs Gilchrist 2 and 1, Mrs Charles lost to Mrs Weir 2 up, Mrs Ingram lost to Miss Cromb 6 and 5, Mrs Scorgie beat Miss Miller 2 up, Miss Wheeler lost to Mrs Anderson 8 and 7. Although the links were heavy the greens were in splendid order and played true. A four-ball match in conjunction with the match finished all square. Railway Delays ' As a result of wash-outs on the Central line.near Ida Valley, railway traffic was held up for three days last week, trains from Cromwell running to Omakau, where passengers and goods were conveyed by buses to Ranfurly. Communication was restored on Saturday for passenger traffic, the goods services being resumed yesterday. WANAKA Golf The Ladies' Club playe'd an L.G.U. Match on Saturday, the results being as follows: Mrs G. T. Morris 93—15—78, Mrs Ewing 94_15_79, Mr& Halllday 106—27—79, Mrs Harris 97—17—80, Mrs Waldron 103—23 80, Mrs Collings 102—19—83, Mrs Morrow 120—36—84, Mrs Scaife 108—21—79, Mrs Ongley 102. Personal Mr and Mrs Sutherland Ross are in residence at Pembroke. Mr and Mrs J. F. Tack will leave for Timaru this week. CROMWELL Austral Dredge Construction work on the Austral-New Zealand Mining Company's large dredge at Lowburn is now practically completed, and during the past fortnight the machinery has been undergoing preliminary tests. These have proved satisfactory, and work will now mainly be concentrated on the checking of the innumerable details attendant on the running of such a large machine. St. Andrew's Church Social A pleasant function was held in the Anglican Hall recently, when the congregation of St. Andrew's Church gathered' to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs W. Hardy, old and esteemed members of the church, who will in future reside in Dunedin. The evening was spent in playing cards and dancing, interspersed with musical items. After supper had been served, the vicar, the Rev. J. M. Templar, presented the guests with a silver entree dish and an electric reading lamp. He spoke in eulogistic terms of the valuable services rendered to the church for many years by both Mr and Mrs Hardy. They all regretted the departure of two such good church members. Mr W. Hooper supported Mr Templar's remarks. Replying, Mr Hardy said his work for the church had been a pleasure, and after all, he had only done his duty. He expressed regret at leaving Cromwell. Returned Soldiers' Committee The annual meeting of the Cromwell Returned Soldiers' Committee was held on Thursday. Mr H. T. Wilkinson outlined the committee's activities for the last year, These included the conduct of three „unerals of returned soldiers, the collection of money for and the erection of a headstone for <the late Mr W. J. .Robb, the collection and despatch of a case of magazines and books for troopships, and the collection of £SO 18s 6d for the Flag Day appeal. Mr Wilkinson was re-elected chairman of the following committee:—Messrs C. Betts, E. A. Cowey, W. Lynn, F. D. Oldfield (secretary), and R. H. Thomas. ROXBURGH Centennial Ribbons At the " old-time " evening of the Haerem'ai Club held on Thursday evening, the Mayor (Mr F. A. Laloli) presented centennial ribbons to those people who had been residents of New Zealand for 75 years. The following residents were presented with ribbons at the function (the age is the first figure given, and the period of residence in the Dominion is given in parentheses):—Mrs Beresford 79 (79), Mrs McConnell 80 (76), Mrs George Bennett 76 (76), Mr Campbell Watson 78 (78). and Mr J. H. Waigth 83 (77). Other residents of the district who were entitled to ribbons, but who were not present, were:—Mrs F. Cockburn 78 (78), Mr D. Watson 78 (78), Mr Donald Rqss 77 (77), Mrs A. H. Tamblyn 76 (76), Mr A. H. Tamblyn 87 (77). Red Cross Appeal At a public meeting called for the purpose of collecting funds in aid of the Red Cross appeal all present were elected a committee, with power to add. Hie Mayor was elected chairman, Mr E. F. Jeffery secretary, and Mr J. H. Waigth. jun., treasurer. It was decided to ask the collectors for the Patriotic Committee if they would be agreeable to canvass the district. It was suggested that the Borough Council should assist if it would

screen a picture in aid of the funds. Mrs J. R. Gilmour was appointed convener of a committee to organise a Paddy's market. It was decided to run a dance and cards evening on May 30, Mr B. M, Jeffery being appointed convener of the dance arrangements and Mrs A. H. Webster convener of the supper arrangements. Mr J. George was appointed a convener to organise raffles, some gifts for which purpose had already been promised by residents present at the meeting. Personal Sergeants T. Henderson and E. Foster were home on leave last week. Mrs W. Henderson and family are spending the holidays in Dunedin. Mrs J. Bennetts, of Henley, is the guest of Mr and Mrs John Bennetts, "Fairview." Mr J. A. Burton, of the local Post Office staff, is on holiday. Miss E. McMahon returned at the weekend from a holiday in the North Island. LAWRENCE Rugby Football Owing to the wet state of the grounds, the South Tuapeka Sub-union's matches were postponed on Saturday till May 18. Rainfall The rainfall for this year to May 8 has been more than double that for the corresponding period last year, being 19.66 in compared with 9.46 in. The rainfall for the first eight days of this month totalled 3.351 n, while it was only 1.45 in for the whole of May last year. Shooting Season Few licences for game shooting have been taken out locally, but those sportsmen who were out early for the commencement of the season secured failbags. Personal Mr G. J. Powley, of Rangiora, has been appointed postmaster at Lawrence. Miss G. Crozier is spending a holiday at Oamaru. HYDE Farewell Social A largely-attended social was held in Hyde recently to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs T., A. Moynihan and family. Mr and Mrs Moynihan have been very popular hotelkeepers for the past four years and a-half, and have taken an active part in local affairs. Making the presentation of a dinner service, Mr J. B. McGill referred to Mr Moynihan's services as secretary of the Hyde Rifle Club, a member of the Hyde Domain, and past president of the cricket club, and to Mrs Moynihan's capability as hostess at the Hyde Hotel. Other speakers were Mr G. Currie and Mr T. Hanifin. Mr J, Kenny, on behalf of the Hyde Rifle Club, presented Mr Moynihan with a silver cigarette box. The presentations and good wishes were acknowledged by Mr and Mrs Moynihan.
