HARRIERS

CAVERSHAM CLUB There was a field o£ 40 runners in the Caversham Club’s annual race for the Holloway Cup (one mile), held at -the Caledonian Ground on Saturday, the track being heavy after the rain. Starting from the limit, Hartstongo was the leader for a lap, but Knox ran to the front in the second lap. Lenz went into the lead in the back straight in the last lap and raced away from the field ta win by 15 yards from Thomson. Flockton, running from scratch, put in a strong finish for third place, followed by R. J. Emmerson, R. F. Morrison, Austin and Barr. The result was: S. A. Lenz (80yds) 1, A. W. Thomson (100yds) 2, E. J. Flockton (scr) 3. Time, 4min 44sec. At a meeting of the Caversham Club’s committee held during the week-end several changes were made in the syllabus for the first half of the season. The amended fixtures are:—May 18. time trial and club run, Forbury Park; May 25, George Street School; June 1. Mornington School; Ju"e 8, Vice-presidents’ Handicap (Morris Cup) and Colts’ Race, Forbury Park; June 15, Edmond Cup Trial (Brettell Cup). Wingatui; June 22, Edmond Cup, Wingatui: June 29, Milton. ST. KILDA CLUB The St. Kilda Club held its one mile and arhalf Novice Handicap at St. Kilda. The honours went to A. Wilson, wTio was first home and recorded fastest time (9min Bsec). Tonkins was second, and W. Paterson third. After the race a run was held by the other members, under Captain L. Dickison. M. Spain was first home. Members were pleased to see R. Baldwin again. A good turnout of colts ran under the whistle of R. Beatson. In a short handicap run home A. Campbell led in from L. Egan and I. Egan. LEITH CLUB The Leith Club h .Id its weekly run from the Caversham Methodist Church, there being ar, excellent muster. Under the leadership of Captain Fincham, a fast pack proceeded by road to Green Island, and then across the paddocks to Abbotsford, coming back home along the Main road to the top of the hill, where they split up into two packs, ong. coming down the short way and the other down the long way for a run home. Results; —B. Hughes 1, I . Fincham 2, J. Markham 3. The slow pack proceeded up the reservoir and over the hills to Green Island. Frorp Burnett street there was a fast run home, resulting: W. Freeman 1, J. Stewart 2, W. Wilson 3. MORNINGTON CLUB The Mornington harriers held their Mile Maiden and Mile Open Handicaps from the St. Kilda bathing pavilion. Thirty-eight runners competed in the races. The Mile Maiden resulted: A. Hamblett (32sec) 1, W. Gardiner (6sec) 2, W. Hanley (6sec) 3. The fastest time was obtained by W. Gardiner with 4min Bsec. W. Hanley came second with 4min 59sec. The Open Mile Handicap was won by T. O. Kennedy, with W. N. Burrows in second place. Broadbent, a new runner, ran well to finish in third place. The times for this race were: T. O. Kennedy 4min'sosec, W. N. Burrows 4min 55sec, After the race a short run was held, won by W. N. Burrows. CELTIC UNITED CLUB A good’ cross-country run by the Celtic United Harriers was held from St. Bernadette’s School. The racing pack run home of about two miles resulted in M. Fay, A. Dyson, and J. Daly bring prominent. The juniors held a non-stop run from Black Head. Prominent in the pack were B. McManus, D. Clements, and Cameron. In the slow pack under Captain E. Paterson, McCarthy, Davies, and Johnson showed out well. The colts had a short run with H. Sullivan. ANGLICAN CLUB The Anglican run was held from Caversham School, under Captain Mann, toward Burnside. Crossing undulating country, the pack returned by way of Lookout Point, Fraser, Davie, Purvis, and Norman being first home. BAPTIST CLUB The Baptist Harriers held their One Mile and a-half Maiden Race over a course at St. Kilda and Taintii. Eight contestants faced the starter, Mr S. C. Gibson. A. Kennedy (on limit) set off at a good pace, followed by the rest at intervals. Kennedy maintained his lead until turning into Queen’s drive, where McLay and Clark turned together. P. McLay immediately went, to the front, and breasted the tape at Onslow House five yards ahead of D. Clark. A. Kennedy, 30 yards further back, was third. Result; P. McLay (35sec) 1, D. Clark (45sec) 2, A. Kennedy (Imin 15sec) 3. Fastest time; W. Duncan (lOsec) 1, P. McLay 2. After the race the remainder of the club held a short race along the "beach. CIVIL SERVICE CLUB About 50 Civil Service runners turned out for the run from the North-East Valley School. The fast pack of 13, under Captain G. Watson, enjoyed a solid run on the road in preparation for the coming big road races. A fast run home resulted; A. R. Geddes 1. W. McKinnon 2, M. McKinnon 3. Deputy Captain Adam took control of the slow pack. The run home resulted; Adam I, Caddy 2. C. Walker controlled a junior pack of 12 runners, who had a steady uphill run. R. Parker had charge of a small slow pack.
