MERCHANDISE MARKET ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK SLIGHT RISE IN ONIONS Onions are now quoted at 13s to 14s a sack, showing a slight advance on recent rates. The market continues to firm. Supplies of Sugar The Port Waikato arrived on Saturday with sugar, and is to be followed on Tuesday by the Waimarino, which is bringing further supplies. Cube sugar manufactured in Auckland is now available, after a bare market for eight or nine months. Sultanas and Raisins The Australian Dried Fruit Control Board has advised New Zealand merchants that no One Crown sultanas will ‘be available this season. Further supplies of Mildura sultanas and currants came to hand last week, but Lexia. raisins have not yet made their appearance. It is expected that Lexias will come forward by the next ship, due in about three weeks’ time. The market is bare of packet seeded raisins. Ceylon Tea Supplies Considerable quantities of Ceylon tea reached the market during the week. Sand Soap Prices Advances in price have taken place in some brands of sand soap. • Canned Tomatoes Some packings of new season’s canned tomatoes, chiefly from the Hawke’s Bay district, are now to hand. BIG RIVER REPORTS Big River Gold Mines, Ltd., reports the following gold returns from March and April, 1940; , In the battery department 2uo tons ot ore were crushed for 121 oz sdwt of melted gold. In the cyanide department 150 tons of sands were treated for 20oz 9dwt of bullion. The total estimated value was £1065. In addition, 3.5 tons of concentrates, valued at £ll2, were saved. In estimating the above values, gold has been taken at 160 s per fine ounce. WHITE’S ELECTRIC DREDGE The White’s Electric Dredging Company reports a return for the week ended May 9 of 18oz from 9000 yards treated in 124 hours.

WORLD WOOL TRADE CHANGES DUE TO THE WAR The war has produced some marked changes in ihe world’s war trade. In Argentina, the United Kingdom is usually the largest buyer, and took 135,38(5 bales during the 1938-39 season. The South American bale weighs approximately 9001 b. Up to the end of January this season, no wool had been exported to Great Britain, states a report issued by Winchcombe, Carson. Limited, Australian woolbrokers. The United States was the outstanding purchaser, taking 64,613 bales, or nearly twice the quantity bought during the corresponding period a year earlier. Germany. previously an appreciable operator, has ceased to buy. France and Belgium have taken less, but Italy has been more active. Japan, inactive 12 months before, has purchased with fair freedom buying 6829 bales. It Is expected that the appraisement of the new Australian clip will be expedited by a start with the offering of catalogues in August, compared with a beginning in October this season. The delay of six weeks was unavoidable in September-Oc-tober, 1939, because of the outbreak of the war. TAUPIRI COAL MINES NET PROFIT SLIGHTLY LOWER Net profit of £10,592, against £12,222 in the previous year, which was the best since 1931, was earned by Taupiri Coal Mines. Limited, in the year ended March 31. Ordinary dividend for the year is unchanged at Is 6d a share or per cent., and absorbs £9750, while preference payments require £I2BO.
